James fonted: >Actually, as had many people. Gould was what one would term >'high-functioning', even if he was autistic/obsessive-compulsive to a degree >or simply eccentric... I think he fits the profile for Asperger Syndrome. There is still argument in the clinical community whether Asperger Syndrome is the same disorder as "high-functioning autism". AS is usually referred to as an "autistic spectrum" disorder -- a spectrum which also includes OCD. It's characterized by many of the things mentioned in the article, but especially normal to very high intelligence, poor social skills and awareness, and intense interests in a very few subjects, plus the need to talk obsessively about them. It's also known as "little professor syndrome", and famous people conjectured to have had AS include Einstein and Mozart (remember "Amadeus"?) More info at http://www.aspennj.org. > If he had been diagnosed, and cured or treated, all of that suffering might > never have turned into such beauty. Beyond that, he was a genius, far above > the mortal ken and lesser people might like to attribute all of that to > disease so as not to feel small in comparison. AS is not a disease, it's a neurological condition of unknown origin. You can't catch it and there is no cure. Autistic-spectrum conditions tend to run in families. Treatments include medication for symptoms including attention deficit, impulsivity, and depression; psychotherapy; and strategy-oriented education. You might say I know a lot about Asperger Syndrome, and that's because my 18-yo son has it. He learned to speak late but taught himself to read at two (hyperlexia), and has strange sensitivities to taste, smell and touch. He has been in two wonderful special-ed schools since the age of five. Last year he took his first course at a mainstream high school -- advanced placement calculus -- and got a 4 (out of 5) on the AP exam, which is a high score and gives college credit. Incidentally, he was a year younger than the high school seniors who take that course. This spring he is getting A's in a sociology class at a local community college, along with his regular high school classes. His current obsessive interests are music and video games. He knows the "genesis" of most of the English prog-rock bands of the seventies, and his favorites are King Crimson and Peter Gabriel. He asked to take classical guitar lessons and he is making terrific progress. He also is the video game guru at his school, and his schoolmates call him when they are stuck at level 25 or whatever. The big difference between what my son has and HFA is that he wants to be normal and have friends. He has been making incredible strides socially, but still barely understands what it means to be a friend. When you have a conversation with him, it often becomes a lecture on his favorite subject, without him noticing if you are interested or even paying attention. It doesn't occur to him to ask how you are doing or feeling, or what's happening in your life. The only way he learned things like making eye contact and responding appropriately in social situations were by constant drilling. Sometimes his hurt, anger and frustration spill over into "acting out". I love him dearly, and have great hopes that his emotional age may approach adulthood in five to ten years. I've given up hoping that he will ever eat vegetables (except for the occasional McDonalds' french fry and his mother's split pea soup blended to velvety consistency.) Sorry for the digression. Please feel free to email me off-list. Mickey :D FTE ListDad http://www.phonetheater.com PS Saw Tara Maclean today in NYC. T-Boy and Greg Teltschik were in attendance. Tara was in fine voice, and hubby Bill killed on "Jordan". ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jun 2000 10:32:26 -0400 (EDT) From: "Julian C. Dunn" Subject: the sleanster holding strong... Hey Julian If you stuck around at Ted's Last night you would have seen Sarah Slean..... okay okay... so she wasn't playing, but at one point, just before Danny Michel went on (as a part of NXNE) she was standing right beside me. I was gonna say something to her, but Sarah really doesn't know me, so I smiled and remained silent. Same thing happened at the Starling / Veruca Salt show a few weeks back. Sarah was in the crowd and past me several times. Maybe someday she will remember me, cause I have actually met her on a couple of occasions. but sarah is famous for not remembering people's names. (although I know she has Christine down pack) Tee hee, reminds me of when Emm thought I was Randy....
