Management) Subject: Re: NOT DISSAPPOINTED! Hi gang... I don't think I've ever posted anything about my personal feelings about a Sarah show (and I've seen what must be hundreds - getting closely rivalled by James, I'm sure!), but now is the time to spill. There are times when being a manager is just...well...ridiculous, really. The weird smudge line between art and commerce, details details details, wide-ranging personalities, even wider-ranging opinions, your artist calling to whisper "viral laryngitis" (the list could go on an on but how boring) are all cause to sometimes forget the first and most important reason I wanted to do this in the first place: the joy of something beautiful. This show was joyous from the first call to the "special guests". The support and true excitement from each of those beautiful people actually made my last minute piece-work fun. The immediate positivity around the show was unmistakable - not only are those folks remarkably talented, they're wonderfully kind and giving. Sarah's band (Mark, Kurt, Drew and Sjanie), hands down, are some of the nicest musicians I've had the honour of working with in my ten years in the business. Without even having to think about it, I knew they'd be more than up to the challenge of the evening, adapting to the performances of others without so much as speaking to one another, let alone having a rehearsal. Until seconds before the first performer the details were still being worked out - set list/order of artists, keys, etc.; it was excellent nervous energy to be immersed in, and I think all the artists were truly beginning to feel it was the start of something very, very special. When the show was finally underway (thanks for your patience, those who were there!), I stood in the back of the room and had what was easily my most enjoyable and memorable evening as "the one who sits at the desk". I won't even try to describe the feeling, but it was so far out on the good side of "WOW" that I can't even see it anymore... Perhaps you saw me - I was the one with the sh*t-eating grin spanning ear to ear. I couldn't pick a favourite performance even if I had to. I loved every single one for different reasons - too unique to be compared. Huge thank-yous to the audience - the electricity started with you and you fed it to the musicians... They'll be the first to credit you... I could gush and gush and rub it in further to those of you who couldn't be there. I'll do much better. I'll tell you that we recorded the whole evening and will humbly ask Steve to put some MP3s up on sarahslean.com over the next few weeks. Please enjoy a piece of that special night with us who were fortunate enough to experience it first hand. Peace. Heather. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 11:26:14 -0500 From: rturingan@dico.com Subject: Re: NOT DISSAPPOINTED! Well I would like to take this opportunity to thanks Heather for her amazing management skills. It is rare that we get an opportunity to see a show, such as that one, even more rare do we as fans show our appreciation to you, Heather as Sarah's manager, great work on the show and even more so great work over the past year that I have been a Sarah fan. As fans we don't always gush over how great a management company can be and I must say you are one of the tops, My other favorite being Joni Daniels and Michael Murphy who helps manage Emm Gryner. Keep up the amazing work and I can't wait to here the MP3's whoo hoo Cheers Rannie okay enough begging from me ------------------------------ Date: 31 Jan 2000 11:34:30 EST From: Jennifer.M.Pease@Dartmouth.EDU (Jennifer M. Here is the deal....if there is enough interest, we are planning a show on the evening of February 16th. I live in Toledo, Ohio so we want to check and see how many people would be able to attend (be sure to check the date because it is a weeknight and note the cover, $15) before confirming the show. Please e-mail me privately if you are interested and we will try to make a final decision by the end of this week. Sarah Slean Tory Cassis Place: Living Room Show in Toledo, OH Date: February 16, 2000 Time: approximately 8 pm to 10 pm (this could change a bit) Charge: $15 per person (it takes this to cover the cost of the band members unless we get like 30 people) Thanks! Hello All, Rannie wrote: >> Okay that's enough begging from me.<< I will also beg for this. Beg as in BEG. You want tears? I'll produce them! Anything to get my hands on that song so I can listen to it again and again and again... Then again, there IS a certain joy to waiting for months to hear it played live at a show. (And then hearing mum say, "No, you can't go." That's always joyous). That way, hearing the bits that I've forgotten is even more crushing than before. What fun to have your heart squeezed and squashed! But aaargh! eergh! Immediate gratification or anticipated gratification? Do I beg for an MP3 or do I just wait for shows to cry? I'm always inconsistent and indecisive. Okay, here's a solution. I'll beg for a compromise. Has anyone been able to catch the lyrics to "Last Year's War"? I'm always too dumbfounded and too clouded over with tears to write anything down at shows, and too scatterbrained to drag a videocamera along. Does anyone know them? All I can remember is the "military gear" line, the "We've kissed again/Can't you see you've already won?" line, of course, the "You say that you're scared/Well, so am I" line, and snippets of the chorus. Does anyone know the whole thing, or more than I do? If so, then I'll be content with waiting with glorious anticipation to hear 'Last Year's War' at the shows. If not, next time I'll bring along a pen and paper, and someone remind me to write it down! (Blame the indecisiveness on exams. Outdated. Futile. Silly, silly things). Finch" Subject: boots? and Tory Cassis Does anyone have any Sarah boots that they might be willing to trade? I don't really have anything to trade but I'm sure something could be worked out. She just does too much great stuff live that she hasn't recorded yet! I'm especially looking for Julia, Sadie, Sweet Ones and Last Year's War. Does anyone have a copy of the hosue show she did in Boston back in November? A copy of that show would make me so happy! Not only did she perform all of the songs that I would like to have, but Kevin Fox was on cello and it was my first Sarah show. Does anyone know if there's a listserv for Tory Cassis? If not, I'd like to start one. I was *so* impressed with him at the M.I.T. show he and Sarah did a few weeks ago. His CD is great but I don't think it comes anywhere close to how great he is live. Sorry, personal note to STEVE ITO! Get in touch with me. If I don't get a chance to see you when I'm in Toronto in two weeks, we may never get to work on that whole dream persona of yours! ;-) Okay, off to get some zzzzzs for me! rox ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ rdfinch@mindspring.com http://roxanne.finch.org Make you run up and down the same hill and they'll break your will "Down From Above" --Moxy Fruvous ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2000 00:01:32 -0500 (EST) From: "Julian C. Roxanne, I don't want to make it sound like I'm coming down hard on you for something we've probably all forgotten about -- so consider this a gentle reminder. From the list charter: - ------- [Note:] Discussions of bootlegging: These are discouraged in order to honor the views of Sarah and her management.
