I agree with Rannie, actually - at first, I wasn't too into it, thought she was a bit too over-the-top for that song, but she seemed to get more of a *feel* for it as she went along. I'm not a huge fan of hers in general, but I liked her jazzy interpretaion of the tune nonetheless. And she *does* have a great voice. Speaking of interpretation, it was just so *neat* to see everyone's different, unique takes on Sarah's songs. As James and Steve and I were discussing after the show, her songs are just so damn good that they stand up so well in any situation. >>>Blue Parade Sjanie McInnes >>Amazing, she has a wonderful voice WOW... does she have any of her >>own >>material? > >No, but she also appears (with Miss Slean) on the SPINE album. She sounds quite different on that album, a lot lower, but it's still quite lovely. I thought it was so sweet how she was so obviously nervous to take a solo turn on a Sarah song, but she was just marvellous. I was actually a little surprised that she didn't sound more like *Sarah* ;), since she always matches Sarah's vocals so precisely when doing backup vocals. >>songs, although at the same time, I dunno what I could picture Emm >> >>singing. > >Sadie :-) Oh, my *lord*, I think I'd die and go to heaven. ;-) - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 22:17:26 -0500 From: steve.ito@utoronto.ca Subject: bounces Hmm, I've gotten only one of the two posts I sent which either means I addressed the first one wrong or it bounced, and unfortunately I have no idea which because on my telnet account here I don't have an "outbox". I just don't > know what to say, gushing words don't even do it... how about utter slack jawed incoherent dumbfounded *lack* of words? I sat there the whole time with this ridiculous grin stretched across my face and sincerely couldn't believe such an amazing thing was happening on the stage. *Sarah* couldn't sing, couldn't utter the merest peep or even a whisper... that voice, that amazing voice rendered cruelly silent. And yet here was this incredible musical event happening on stage. Does anyone remember a few years ago at the Olympics when some obscure runner collapsed on the track in agony, having ruptured a tendon or something incredible like that? And yet this for him was the most important thing in his life, he had to finish. And his father, unable to watch his son writhe in futile mortal pain any more, shoved aside protesting security guards to burst out on to the track and help his son limp those final yards across the finish line... that was perhaps the most touching human moments I've ever seen in sports. Well, it was kind of like that last night. Except it wasn't her father helping her across the finish line, it was her fellow musicians, converging in an overwhelming show of compassion and support and a joyous torrent of unbridled musical brilliance. >From the first few notes of Me and Jerome, sung with fierce passion and intensity by Jay Englishman (who as Tab reminded me last night is brother to Esthero, who many of you may be familiar with), I knew that this was to be a very special night. A truly good song is a precious thing that has depths that can be mined and yield wonderous things that even the creator never knew existed. For the years I've known Sarah I'd only really heard her interpretation of her own songs. Which is a terrific thing of course. *BUT* what a treat it was to hear some of the most amazing, most talented musicians in the business present *their* take on Sarah's songs. Cliche as it may be, it's true, it was like rediscovering the awe and wonder of Sarah's music for the first time, seen through the eyes of the likes of Sarah Harmer, Leslie Feist, Moe Berg, and other luminaries of the T.O. music scene. Rapture. Some notes... > Me & Jerome Jay Englishman This was sooo good. So raw, so feeling, so intense. If you think that Sarah's songs can't be belted out in over the top neck-vein-popping style, you haven't seen Jay Englishman perform Me and Jerome. Amazing. > Before Your Time Kurt Swinghammer Wow. The guitar god shows he can sing too. And when he sings, he has this incredible gravity to his voice, this indescribable quality, like being a musical deity of sorts that I can describe only by invoking comparisons to the likes of Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. Some people are just like the embodiment of the soul of music, and exude it with every breath. That's Kurt Swinghammer. > My Invitation Sarah Harmer ........ holy. I'm so used to her belting it out with Weeping Tile that to see her treat our Sleaner's song with such tenderness and grace... it was incredibly moving. Sarah S "printed" to me later that she can never sing this song again. > Habit Dave Matheson (Moxy Fruvous) This song is one of my favourites on the CD. And my god, but Dave Matheson is the perfect one to sing it. Heresy perhaps, but I actually may prefer his version to Sarah's! That gravelly voice, it's made for Habit, and he sang it with the feeling and showmanship that the Fruvs are famous for. Damn, but I wish I had a tape of this, because I doubt I'll ever get to hear it again. > Bonnie's Song Coco Love Alcorn I remembered the terrific voice and the comfortable but magnetic presence on the stage that is Coco Love Alcorn from my last Coco show, but I'd forgotten how stunning beautiful she is. I'll shut up about that now, but Coco did a wonderful version of Bonnie's Song. > High Tory Cassis I've talked of how Dave Matheson was a perfect match for Habit... one might think the opposite would hold true for Tory Cassis and High. You'd think he'd at least change the lyrics to sing this from the (hetero) male perspective, but he didn't, and that made the song all the more enjoyable. And damn but I love this guy's voice, as James described it once, that blackberry voice. > Eliot Oh Susanna & Leslie Fiest (Fiest/By Divine Right) Another of my personal faves from the CD. And again, an incredible rendition of the song, performed, or rather *played* to the hilt by Leslie Feist and Oh Susanna (cigarette in hand - the only one I saw all night, at the request of the Sarah crew! That was amazing in itself!). It was soo much fun. I *still* haven't seen Feist perform yet, despite many glowing recommendations from a certain singer-songwriter whose name sounds like a letter of the alphabet, but this performance really lit a fire under me, I really gotta get myself to one of her/their (does 'Feist' mean her or her whole band?) shows. > Weight Moe Berg Moe hit the stage and instantaneously had the place roaring in laughter with that dry but insanely quick wit. His style is so different from Sarah's, it was great to see him do one of her songs. I'd go see Moe play anywhere. I wish he'd play more often. > Blue Parade Sjanie McInnes The backup singer finally takes center stage, and demonstrates once and for all why Sarah will accept no substitute for backup vocals. > There's no real describing it though. I must say when Ms. Pollack tells > you there is a "surprise" you will be _surprised_. This was a dream, it > had to be, kids, this did happen, right? It certainly seemed like a dream. It was definitely one of the most incredible shows I've seen in a long time. Some shows just have this amazing electricity *crackling* in the air. It arcs from performer to audience to performer, and everyone is just, well, really *on*. Each performer inspires the next to ever greater levels of musicianship. On nights like this you expect perfection, and have that expectation wildly surpassed. Again and again and again. For a jaded concert goer like myself, these shows are extremely rare. But last night, that was one of them. The scary thing is, if the stars had been aligned correctly, it could have been an even more amazing show. Think of all the amazingly talented songwriters that Sarah counts among her friends. But the show was cobbled together at the last minute with folks that just happened to be around, and I doubt there was much practice time to be had. As Heather said though, just wait 'til the next time Sarah has viral laryngitis. Steve P.S., I think everyone should be able to see "tribute nights" like this for their favourite songwriters, where the performers are all *really* good musicians and songwriters themselves. These people have the perception to see wonderful new things in the music and the talent and the skill to express them in a gorgeous new way. It really does take your appreciation of the songs to a whole new level. One I particularly recommend for Toronto area folks is an annual Tom Waits tribute hosted by Tory Cassis and featuring a rotating cast of amazing talent. Our own Sarah in fact is a past participant. A consistently statospheric level of talent, and one of the best kept secrets in the Toronto music scene. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 23:25:04 EST From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: sarah's keyboard Hey, Anyone know which Roland Sarah has? For those of you who went, I'm glad that you were so amazed by it. Maybe Sarah will do another one (even when not afflicted with laryngitis), after having realized how successful it was. (I was so amused and... touched - is this the right word? - that Sarah decided to organize the event, when anyone else would have probably just expected the audience to understand. Laryngitis. No singing. Period. This was a very considerate thing to do!) I'm glad that everyone enjoyed it. I, on the other hand, am crying because of exams, which inconveniently are happening... oh, right now. I was forced to miss this wonderful event due to a completely futile and outdated formality that no longer makes sense! Justice, that's all I ask! Maybe one day fate will cut me a break and not throw monkey-wrenches into my concert schedule.
