That grrl is just way too scarily talented. ;-) And she had a *cold*, dammit! Speaking of which, also of note were a note-perfect, chills-up-the-spine reading of the new acapella tune "Vertigo" (not a single waver in her voice *despite* that pesky bug!) and a lovely little solo run-through of other newie "Duncan". Oh, and James' request of old gem "Sadie" was a rare treat, too. :-) If she'd actually listened to me and played "Elaine" (hmph! ;P), it would have been an absolutely perfect set. >what about Emm and her moving new song "Idaho" (mmm listening to it > >now!)... Tell all! :) Is it just me, or does anyone else get a lump in their throat every damn time she gets to the whispered "it's just another year down" refrain? Um, please hide all the nearby sharp instruments. ;-) But no, , she didn't do "Idaho", although I was really hoping she would. It was more of a Big, Shiny Rock Show (well, Emm-style ;-)), with a bit of a quiet interlude (including a very apt 'Doomsday' in time for Y2K ;-)). I'm *still* high from last night - a double-shot of Emm and Sarah is almost too much for me to handle. Such bliss. I dunno 'bout the rest of you, but that was *my* New Year's party, dammit. ;-) All the best for 2000, y'all. ;) - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 22:04:56 PST From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Re: If you went to the Sarah/Emm show tonight... What were their sets like? Did they use their bands? >Did >Sarah play the amazing "Sweet Ones" and "Last Years War?" ... I'd be only too happy to spill it (although I know it's a little late). The show was absolutely, positively, completely, freakin' amazing! Every time I go to a show (not very often, but bless Christmas vacation and my mother's suddenly relenting nature), I kind of expect to just be moderately impressed - probably due to listening to the CD's too much. Just expect to hear the same thing, except live. I'm always wrong, of course. Every time I go I just get completely blown away, and even though I'm aware that Sarah's live shows have this incredible energy, pulse... being jammed in a room with people of equally good taste (let's all pat ourselves on the back :-) ), it seems like a wonderful surprise every time. Just hearing that voice and piano through your feet... No, that's wrong. It's better than that. You hear it in your throat. Every show I attend I am more amazed. Pure respect! Like Tab mentioned, Sarah was also host to a cold, but - for some reason - didn't sound honky like other normal humans when she sang. And I agree, singing the acapella 'Vertigo' with a cold was definitely a brave thing to do - there's just something so beautiful and vulnerable about a voice without accompaniment, she pulls it off every time. And with a cold! (BTW... for those who know her better - is there anything artistic Sarah CAN'T do? Let's count 'em up: singing, writing, painting, poetry, playing the piano... Maybe she can't dance or something. :-) ) Although I loved all (including Emm's incredibly wonderful set... I was sad that she didn't play 'Idaho' - that whole "so she could see that you were drowning" part always pushes me over the simply melancholy to downright crushing line... although she did play one of my favourite pieces of glorious bitterness, '89 Days of Alcatraz'... plus the cover of 'Holiday', for which we all cast grins in Rannie and family's direction) I have to say that my favourites were definitely Sarah's 'Last Year's War' (I think I'm slowly becoming the poster girl for that song), 'Sadie' (which I'd never heard before, but thank you James for getting Sarah to play it). 'Sweet Things' was definitely a surprise, considering that Sarah more or less played it as an emergency piece - with a scarf on - when Emm didn't show up on time. However, I really enjoyed it - when you guys were saying that it was 'pop' I was expecting a flat-out sarcastic imitation of our insipid friends Brittney, 'N Sync, and the Boys. I should have known better... it was a great song, just very energetic, and I couldn't help but laugh hearing that very honest, but decidedly un-Sarah-esque line, "If I could get just one piece of that..." Great song! And lastly, I really, really loved the new song 'Duncan.' Kind of along the styles of 'Eliot', I suppose, a rather upbeat Parisian-cafe/folksy melody with a wonderful story-line. And that chorus! Something like, "Oh, you fools, you fools/Don't give in to fate/If this is all we're fighting for/Then rage, my darling, rage..." Wow! Any way, I've babbled on for too long. It was a wonderful show, and Sarah and her oh-I-just-wrote-this-song-10-minutes-ago skills will never fail to amaze me. Steve and Rannie, it was nice to *finally!* meet you guys! Everyone have a great Y2K! Here's to another wonderful year of Navy Soup and great music! 'Sweet I'd like to take the credit both you and Tab gave me for this, but she just played it without any prompting from me. It was very nice though and she knows both Steve and myself miss those "old" 'girl' songs like Sadie and Elaine... ...and that cover of "A Case of You". It was good to see her again, trooper that she is, with that nasty cold. She should've been home in bed protecting that lovely voice. But those old songs are where we first caught those glimmerings of her brilliance and although she now tosses out better songs, like candy out of a pinata, those tunes mean the world to me. :-) Sadie, Sarah once said was written for her the daughter she hadn't had yet... ...its so sad and beautiful. > was 'pop' I was expecting a flat-out sarcastic imitation of our insipid > friends Brittney, 'N Sync, and the Boys. I should have known better... it Sarah as Brittney (perhaps, one day Queen Brittney.... eeewww), um... ...Not! :-) > oh-I-just-wrote-this-song-10-minutes-ago skills will never fail to amaze me. Me either, and after 42 shows too! I'm impressed with her continued ability to develop beyond our expectations. Happy Y2K Folks, James. P.S. Since she already do all the things listed above, there is no reason to not believe that she also dances. ------------------------------ End of navy-soup-digest V2 #187 *******************************
