When Leif told me she wanted to invite Sarah to play a Living Room concert in our home, my answer was, "So do I, but it's weeknight - we'll never get enough people who are able to make it out, plus I'm not sure if our downstairs & upstairs neighbors would appreciate such fine music. She insisted that we try though, so we tested the waters for interest and got the nod from our landlord/neighbors, and sure enough it came together...on relatively short notice to boot! Since there's hardly anyone on Sarah's Navy-Soup list in this area, we posted the invitation on the somewhat-related Ecto list, and extended personal invitations to some close friends who go out to many shows with us. We had well over 20 who confirmed, and a good majority of them actually showed up. Unfortunately, this morning we noticed that the directions I sent (twice) to one of the true Navy-Soupers on the list bounced or got delayed by her mail provider, Yahoo...so Erica and her friend from NJ probably didn't get them in time to attend. Erica, if you're reading, I'm so sorry about that - we did try. That was about the only glitch of the night. Sarah and the band waited a few extra minutes to see if they'd show up, giving everyone time to watch the end of The Matrix on satellite which had been captivating us in the meantime. Then we dimmed the lights and the show got underway at about 9:00, with most guests occupying a seat on the living room floor a few feet in front of Sarah. She led off with Eliot, Playing Cards with Judas and Twin Moon. That was followed by a fabulous song that I think I heard once before, although I'd forgotten about it, called Sadie. If you haven't heard this yet, make sure to request it if you get a chance next time you see Sarah perform - it really is incredible. The set went on to include two new songs that she had also performed the previous night at CB's Gallery. Her feel-good future hit "candy pop" song, which I believe is called Sweet Ones, was a real show highlight both nights. And she performed Duncan, a sweet, slow song with that Sarah signature feel. Of course, these are my favorite moments of any show, when I get to hear something new. :) Several of the people at the house were seeing Sarah for the first time though, so it was all new to them as she continued with more songs from both of her CDs. Then she closed with Last Year's War, a perfect finale as it is undoubtedly one of Sarah's finest compositions so far. Kudos to the band - the sound in here was fabulous! I borrowed a small guitar amp from a friend which Kevin Fox used for his cello, and I have a pretty good stereo system which we adapted for use as the PA for Sarah's vocals and keyboard. The rest of the band brought everything they needed. The volume level in the house, and balance between all the instruments and vocals couldn't have been better. Mark did an amazing job of kicking those drums without knocking the acoustic tiles off the ceiling below. Kevin had a pedal he used to control the volume and ambience on Sarah's voice to suit each individual song just right, and Drew's bass-playing sounded perfect in the mix. Needless to say, the performance from all members just kicked! After the show, most people stuck around for a while, at least until Leif's homemade 6-layer bean dip was gone. ;) Actually, it looked like quite a few were picking up some CDs and t-shirts. There aren't that many chances to buy Sarah's stuff here in the U.S. northeast, so I think a few people here were happy to finally get the chance to score some of it. So I think we can call Sarah's first Living Room concert a success! It may not have been the biggest crowd on the tour, but it was definitely an appreciative one, and I have to think it was just as much fun for Sarah and the band to be here as it was for all of us. Thanks to everyone who came out, some who travelled a long way on a work night - we couldn't have done it without your support. And thanks Sarah, Heather, publicist Joanne, and the band - you all rock!!! :) Dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 13:21:04 -0500 (EST) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: NJ House Concert follow-up On Fri, 19 Nov 1999, Dan Stark wrote: > followed by a fabulous song that I think I heard once before, although I'd > forgotten about it, called Sadie. If you haven't heard this yet, make sure She used to play Sadie a lot. Well about every second gig or so... another fabulous tune that's disappeared somewhat is "Elaine", those two 'girl' songs used to quite prominent in the set... I'm also going to the Moxy Fruvous show on Sunday so I'll be seeing Sarah twice this weekend--what an introduction! rox ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Nov 1999 13:07:22 -0500 From: "Kevin B. Pease" Subject: Sarah House Concert in Worcester, Mass -- November 20, 6 p.m. Howdy folks, For those of you who saw Chris Snyder's announcement the other day, of a house concert with Sarah, but said, "Dammit, I can't be there, but I'd die to be able to see her play," here's a second chance for you to see her perform: Same day, different venue & time! Sarah will be performing at my house, just outside Worcester ("WELCOME TO WISTAH!"), Massachusetts on November 20th, from approximately 6 to 7 p.m. She will be performing with her band (consisting of drums, upright bass, and cello, as well as Sarah on keyboards.) Now... I know you all know who she is, so I think I can skip the description. :) However, space is VERY limited at this point. I've been trying to get some of my friends who've never heard her before come out and see her play... I've got 17 people who are confirmed right now, and I really will only have room for a couple more people (I'm trying to get attendance between 20 and 25 people...)-- SO, If you want to come, respond to this email & let me know as soon as possible, please. The faster you let me know you want to come, the happier you & I will both be. So, without further ado, here's the details: Who: Sarah Slean, with band (cellist, upright bass, drums) Where: My house, in the warm & sunny little cow-town of Millbury, MA (directions will be provided to those who need them) When: November 20th. Sarah will start playing about 6 p.m., doors open about 5 p.m. (I'll provide soda & a few bits of food & the like... if you want anything else to eat or drink, you're welcome to bring it with you.) NOTE: This is a "dry" (non-alcoholic) event, and a "smoke-free" venue. If you need to smoke, you will be banished to the porch for the duration of your cigarette... if you want to drink, you will have to wait until after the show, and go find a bar. :) Admission: I'm asking for $15 per person (which, by way of explanation, is more than what Chris Snyder is asking, because Sarah will be playing with a band at my place, so there's 4 people who need to get paid.) If you're interested in attending tomorrow evening, respond to this email and let me know as soon as you can. Hope to see some of you there...
