Anyways, Yes Sarah was Awesome both at the HMV show (I saw you Christine, I was the filipino guy with the camera that took shots from all over, not that you were paying any attention to me. I saw Jordan of course, nice to see you again, considering I haven't seen you since Beachfest and I saw Tab... no surprise there. Also bumped into one of Julian's friends from UofT and 2 fumblers from the other Sarah List.... At rivoli I saw James and Steve and Paul.... long time no see boys especially Steve. ) Anyways yes Sarah was awesome... I still remember sneaking out of the rivoli after sarah's set, before the encore and i had this strange sensation that she would play Twin Moon and she did.. so we stopped and listened from the back before leaving. BTW, I finally got a copy of Blue Parade. They were sold out at the HMV by here (UW) and Laurier, so I'm guessing her CD's pretty popular. I've played her music here for a rather substantial group of people in my house and they love the music! They're now trying to get copies of the CD, only they can't find it! I finally got to see sarah play (@ the riv last thursday) and was of course awestruck. I will be going out of my way if necessary to attend many more show's while i have the chance- A question for the group: How long do we have before her popularity starts to skyrocket, venues and ticket prices get larger, etc.? For example: I can remember a time when i could see sarah mclachlan at venues not much larger than the ones s.s. is playing now. The last time i saw sarah mclachlan i was in a stadium sitting behind a group of drunk women who insisted on standing up, shouting, and slinging their beers around like they were in a british pub watching the soccer finals on the tele. I guess my point is that we should cherish this time while we have it. Thoughts anyone? Sarah did a pop song, which she prefaced by saying that she asked herself why she was always so serious in her songwriting so she decided to write a pop song. Her voice dripped with sarcasm and her whole demeanor while playing made it quite clear that she considered the whole thing a huge joke... and it was this happy, fluffy, and insanely fun and relentlessly catchy pop song that was easily as instantly accessible and hooky as anything on top 40 radio. It instantly brought to mind Emm Gryner's "Hook Machine" - Sarah can be a hook machine too! :-) Yet Sarah obviously considered it a throwaway song, written and performed as a big joke, even though she did take the trouble to teach it to her band. The whole time I kept wondering if this would be one of those songs that would occur just once or twice and then disappear into oblivion. Hopefully she'll keep it alive for her live shows at least. So everyone... make sure you request Sarah's "pop song" whenever you see Sarah play! This is something I've wondered the past couple of years. I can definitely see all this happening. Its been really neat watching this unfold, watching the crowds get bigger (I've seen Sarah twice I think were _I_ was the audience, I mean aside from the waitstaff and the other band), but ticket prices haven't changed that much, last Thursday's show was only $5. [Aside: Its funny Amanda checked to see if I was on the list before I'd quite made it down the hallway :-) I got a giggle out of that :-) ] I'd seen this happen before too, with Sarah M and Jewel and a few other artists. Never at this close range before... ...I think we should all cherish this time... I'm still surprised after 41 shows and three and a half or so years. In that time I've seen her confidence on stage blossom and her songwriting mature to a degree I wouldn't've thought possible and I've come to think of this as more of a beginning than anything else. But back to the question. How long? A year, two, five. It'll happen I'm sure of that if nothing else. In this case though I think slow and steady will win the race. And that's the most thrilling thing of all. :-) >could've heard a pin drop between songs. Respect. Awe. It was akin It was unreal. The whole "pin-drop" thing is such a cliche, but literally, folks, it was *that* silent. The girl had the room in the palm of her hand (and it was even an industry-heavy crowd, which is usually notorious for being rather blase and jaded! ;P). James remarked at the time that Sarah won't be *able* to play the Rivoli, which is a fair-sized club, much longer, and he's absolutely right. When our little group of five arrived around 9 pm, there was no one else there at all, and we were actually a little worried that there wouldn't be a good turnout. By the time Sarah took the stage around 11, someone said to me, "Omigod, turn around and take a look at that!" I turned from my seat at the front of the stage and looked out at a sea of people - the place was *packed*, standing-room only (they'd put in tables, cabaret-style for the evening, though the Riv is usually an open-floor, standing room venue). >to Jewel's legendary Bathurst Street Theatre gig. Sarah was wonderful as always, the band *rocked*, opener Kurt Swinghammer (Sarah's guitarist) blew me away (now I know why the man is a god in the industry :)), but just being surrounded by friends and the good vibes was really the most important ingredient of all.
