Jump, Little Children has a That would be (and I always forget the title to this one), "Habit". For some reason when I see "habit" I don't think of, say, a _smoking_ habit, but of a nun's habit. Go figure :) Sarah also played the beautiful and sad "Last Year's War", and dedicated a rendition of "Ogoni Star" to Steve Ito. She hasn't played this one in a long, long while... so it was nice to hear it again. Unfortunately I couldn't stay around for Jump, Little Children or Guster, but I hope they were good :) - - Julian [ Julian C. Pease) Subject: kingston last friday So I finally saw Sarah play live this weekend in Kingston... after taking a 14-hour bus from New Hampshire to Toronto, my friend and I rented a car and drove to Kingston, stayed with a friend and saw the show. She did not disappoint! She played a lot of songs from BP and Universe but I loved that she played other beautiful songs that I had never heard before, and since she was playing without the band (just her and the keyboard), the different arrangements (for a solo piano, rather than other instruments -- "I Want To Be Brave," for instance, was interesting to hear with the piano rather than guitar--though I think I prefer the guitar version) were awesome, too. What'd she play... well, I *loved* the first song she sang which I had never heard before... don't know what it's called, maybe "Sadie"? I'm sure I don't remember everything, but she also did Weight, I Want to be Brave (which I always call "Madeliene"), Habit, Blue Parade, Narcolepsy Weed, Eliot, an a cappella song she said she had written 15 minutes ago (??), Me and Jerome.... it pissed me off because I felt she had to cut her show short because the guy who opened for her played for SOOOO long... encore after encore, and then he was like "oh my housemates are here now so i'm gonna play this song *again*," etc. It wasn't that he was horrible, but he definitely played longer than she did, and of course I was aggravated about that. (He got six encores--without the audience demand, I might add--whereas:) At the end, she had to give us a *choice* of what last song we wanted her to play (I suspect because they were telling her to get off the stage), Blue Parade or Last Year's War. I wanted to hear LYW SOOO badly, after all I've heard about it from people on this list... but some people were shouting Blue Parade and I guess I wasn't loud enough. ::sigh:: Sarah said afterwards though that she intends for LYW to be on her next recording. So maybe I'll just have to wait till then to hear it (argh!). A few adjectives to share after *seeing* her perform for the first time... she's hypnotizing! so tiny! beautiful! and so intense... I wish I lived in Toronto so I could see her perform all the time. I'd be such a groupie. :) Oh, and so today my friend and I were roaming the HMV downtown in Toronto before I caught my bus, and my friend looks up and says, "Hey! That Sarah Slean is HMV's Indie Performer of the Month!" And I looked up and there it was. Woohoo. :) Anyway, just wanted to offer up this short review of her show... it's 5:40 am, I just got home from the long bus ride from Toronto, and I'm supposed to go to class at 8:00 am but I don't see that happening right now. :) Ah well... Take care, jenn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Nov 1999 14:34:37 -0500 From: what@ican.net (What? Management) Subject: WOW! Thank you... Hello Soupers! Thanks to all of you amazing people who have answered our cry for help regarding filling in the empty spaces for our jaunt into the U.S. this month. I've been out of town on the road with Sarah from Thursday morning until just now (still downloading your messages!), so I'll be getting back to you all as soon as I can. I'm overwhelmed! Thank you all so very, very much. To say that Sarah and I don't do this alone is such an understatement... Joy, Heather What? Woohoo. :) That reminds me - there's an article on Sarah/Blue Parade on the cover of HMV's in-house independent music newsletter, "Indie Nation". There's not much in way of new info, it's more of an in-depth review of the album/her music, but some of the things the writer has to say are quite interesting, so check it out. Also, hope to see lots of you folks out at her in-store at HMV this Thursday (Nov. 4, 6 p.m.)... It's kinda nice - I get to walk over 'round the corner from school right after my last class of the day... :) - - Tab :) NP: "Passenger", Tara MacLean (y'all go out and get this album *now*!) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of navy-soup-digest V2 #156 *******************************
