[Adam Lynch ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 14:12:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Bloo Subject: Sarah Slean @ Marine Club in Vangroovy, Apr. 17th Well, Saturday night I finally was able to see Miss Slean on the left coast. It was smoky, and crowded but very worth it. The venue was the Marine Club in Vancouver - I don't know if this place is *also* called something else, but...it's NOT in the phone book. We had to ask somebody - THEY didn't know... but the local entertainment paper had an article on Oh Susannah and it listed a contact number for the venue. So we called and got directions. All well and good. So we get to the corner. Not a venue in sight. Keep looking. Still no. More looking. Still no venue. We walk down one of the streets and pass by some entrances to what look like deserted or closed businesses. Still no venue. We walk by and we see it. A door to a stairway. The sign is written in felt tip pen on a piece of paper scotch-taped to the door. Um, ok. 8-} Segueway to later when we arrive for the show. This place was... different than I expected. 8-} But there are quite a few people, so there is no deficit of people knowing about the place. By the time we left, the place was PACKED! My friend and I were able to grab a table at the very front, and we watched all the goings on of seting up. The set started later than advertised, so my friend decided to braid my hair, then proceeded to braid some bar straws...with a little less success than my hair. Unfortunately, that's when she tried to start lighting the straws on fire. ;-} Goo thing she didn't try that with my hair. 8-} Boy, am I *glad* Sarah chose that moment to come on stage! 8-} Sarah was the opener, so her set was shorter. She has some relatives in the area and they were in attendance. Shout-outs went to them. 8-} I am ultra-crappy when it comes to set lists, so I don't think I will try. I *do* remember her playing Playing Cards With Judas, Weight, Me & Jerome (I think she started with that.) She also played Twin Moon. Um, does *anyone* recall me doing a silly stab at trying to understand the lyrics to that song after the song was first released on the web site? Well. I usually don't like to do that, since everyone is free to wear sunscreen and all that, but from the sound of it, I hadn't the foggiest clue of what the song meant *as it was written by Sarah.* She prefaced the song with a description of how it came about meanwhile not mentioning what song she was talking about. So I am thinking "great! another new song!" And she launches into Twin Moon. All during the song my continuing thought is: Was she talking about the same song? 8-} Key thing to remember about lyrics: don't try to assign a meaning to them and expect anyone else to arrive at the same meaning as you did - especially not the writer. ;-} She wrapped up the set with "Universe", at which time she asked everyone to close their eyes. So, I did. 8-} Instincts are right on that one. It does have a special subtle power that way, even beyond its own intrinsic "wowiness". So much of that song does feel like you are all alone in space, but with your eyes closed, that feeling is reinforced. Beautiful way to end the set. I know several people there around us were *totally* taken by Sarah's set - those who came not knowing anything about Miss Slean. I had to spread my knowledge of Sarah-Slean-anna a bit when the masses wanted to know more. I had wanted to hear Ogoni Star (since it isn't on the new disc), but I don't think she played it. Not that I would KNOW, mind you, since I have never heard it, and there were about a zillion new songs I had never heard before. Maybe some other time. 8-} A shipment of Universe CDs was held up and didn't arrive in time to Vancouver, so they didn't have any discs to sell at the show. 8-{ (I know this pissed Heather off to no end 8-}) After the show, I made my way back to the booth and got to finally meet Heather. I talked her ear off for about 12 days. She was very polite about nodding and acting interested, but I know exactly how hard it is to drive as much she has been driving (I drove 15,000 miles around the US last year in two months...) - it amazed me she was even conscious, let alone lucid enough to joke about it all. Van troubles aside (I hope you all make it back ok Sarah, Heather and company!) they were all in one piece, in good humor, and a pretty happy bunch. I actually DID end up being glued to Heather for, well, ALL of Oh Susannah's set because - well... That venue is SMALL. When I got up to go back to my seat, there was a totally packed standing room only about 10 people deep. I didn't see any way I was ever going to get back to the front through THAT. But in retrospect, I recall that there was this little bartender guy that was somehow able to constantly slip though everybody, so I guess it wasn't impossible. So I talked to Heather for a while, as she kept pushing merchandise at me. 8-} I *was* able to snag Oh Susannah's CD so I could hear what I missed of the show. Did you know that all those shirt designs are Sarah's? Seems she is a person of many skills, including graphic design. Go Sarah! Remember. Sarah is nuts about Chocolate. Heheheh. I don't think I will ever be forgiven for bringing that up, eh? Jon A mentioned he was going to be there, but I didn't see him - Jon! Were you there and just obscured by the smoke? 8-} I put the sign-up instros for navy-soup at the front of Sarah's little paper mailing list book. We might start seeing an influx of people through that on this last leg of the tour. I hope I didn't screw up the sign-up instructions. That would be major bummers. 8-} Everyone think good thoughts for their van as it journeys over the Rockies. Break-downs are a BAD thing... Enough fragmented rambling from me for the moment. Its time to get some work done.
