It's one of those albums that gets under your skin after a while. At first listen, I wanted to physically eradicate all the drums, especially on "The Price of Eagle Hats and Space Suits", because the few times I've seen Dylan play, it's been solo (has he ever played with a band?), and I *love* his acoustic guitar playing on that one live. But I've played the CD constantly over the last day or two, and every time I leave the house, I'm left humming something from it for the rest of the day. :) My favorites: "The Price of...", "The Wind and the Rain" (I've been singing that all day today!), "Impossible Ray" (love that doo doo doo chorus ), and "Yellowbelly" (see below). >Yellowbelly is a fabulous song, with Sarah Slean's gently lilting >vocals its even better. This single track alone is worth buying the >CD! I've Agreed completely. Sarah Slean fans, do yourself a favor and pick this up, not only for this gorgeous Sarah-sung tune, but because you'll be discovering another solid singer-songwriter in a similar melodic, lyrical vein. It's hard trying to describe this song - Steve mentioned Mazzy Star, and there is that type of heady, keening feel to it. It's got a very hazy, dreamlike quality, with Sarah's vocals a notch lower than the range she usually sings in. > Rayanne started off with a very short set of three songs. I'd >really love to hear more. Fortunately I, and _you_ too, can March 27, I've seen her twice now, and recognized one or two of the songs from the last time, they are that memorable. She's a great singer-songwriter, and I expect big things down the line. >1999 at the Freetimes Cafe, 320 College St. starting around 9pm. :-) Come one, come all (and bring your friends, dammit)! Seriously folks, the last showcase in November was just wonderful, and you'll be missing an excellent evening of music if you don't come. > I am so very grateful to Emm for convincing Noah to play last >night. It was so very nice to hear him again. I've really missed his >dead-on goofy charm. The utter oddness and anti-song parts of his >songs. Always genuine and never too cool, Mr. Mintz was in fine form >belting out old favourites and stuff with the ink not yet dry. More! >We want more! Hopefully the crowd response was enough to get him back >on stage even on a semi-regular basis! He's a nutty genius and needs to come back, unappreciative audiences be damned! He seemed genuinely taken aback by the response of the crowd, which was kinda sweet. :) > Madame President herself then took to the stage, sans introduction >for two songs. Yes, just two! "Stereochrome" a new one (and a >_gooood_ one!) Love it - some seriously great guitar work here, folks (replete with solo - rock on! ). >and the infectious advanced-meme-song "Hook Machine", which is YES! I hadn't heard that one live in so long that I was thrilled that she played it. :) >going through my head thank you very much! ;-) This despite Noah's >pleas for "...the one about the Bus." ;-) and mine for "Sabotage!" >:-) Oh, so that was *you* - but of course. And Noah totally cracked everyone up with that. > And the Main Event, Cicero aka Dylan White. Oh, I could go in to >great detail about the songs not on the CD :-) (Including Elfman's Okay, so I have a confession to make - I had to leave early, about halfway through Dylan's set (sorry, sorry!), but everything I heard, including 'The Price of Eagle Hats and Spacesuits', and the Red Autumn Fall cover (man, that guy does a mean Simeon! ), was great. >Waterloo!!!) and some of the new songs and the duet with Emm (The ACK! Did I miss that? :( Did she sing anything else with him? Emm would love this , but "The Wind and the Rain" reminds me a lot of "Sometimes Always", that Jesus and Mary Chain song where Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval trades lines with her then-boyfriend singer of J&MC. >In all it was a great nice, Dead Daisy really knows how to throw a >party! :-) Totally. I'd never been to Ted's Wrecking Yard before, but it seemed like the right cozy place of a room to hold the show. There was just this lovely warm vibe of friends coming together to share some good music. Like I was telling Steve, it totally reminded me of "the old days" at the Free Times Cafe when Emm, Noah, and Sarah played together. The cast of characters was a little different at the Cicero gig, but that elusive, magical vibe of old was definitely present. - - Tab :) P.S. For those of you in Toronto who didn't make the show, you can pick up Cicero's CD, "Out of Nowhere", at the (Yonge) HMV's indie section NOW! :) Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of navy-soup-digest V2 #34 ******************************
