Lee's is a pretty big club, so it was good that Sarah had a full-band arrangement (Sjanie McInnes on backup vocals, the one, the only Mr. Kevin Fox on cello, and Emm's drummer Stephen McGrath on drums(!)) backing her up. Not that she needed them - the audience was so warm and attentive that she could've sang acapella and still charmed the crowd. :-) Fruvous fans are great folks - true music lovers and genuinely nice people. But the venue itself is so cavernous, even when packed (and boy, it was PACKED that night, baby!), that the full band sounded incredible - It think that's the most... uh, *rockin'* (I know, I know - Sarah rocking?! ;-)) I've ever heard Sarah. Even the delicate numbers like "John the 23rd" had a robustness to them that was noticeable. So of course songs like "High" and "Playing Cards With Judas" built up and up slowly into spine-chilling peaks of perfect sound - all the players, even the newly-inducted Stephen, seemed to be playing as one. I don't know if it was the vibe of the room, or just an "on" night, or all of the above , but it was one of the best sets I've heard in ages, and that's saying a lot considering I happen to think every set Sarah plays is remarkable. :-) Setlist: Me & Jerome (w/Kevin) Angel (whole band) High Bonnie's Song (hadn't heard that one in a while - very nice) Playing Cards With Judas (Me. Want. CD. NOW!!) Closer (first time I've heard it w/band - wow) Weight Twin Moon John the 23rd See, even the setlist was sublime! ;-) Onto Fruvous - well, they rocked the house, of course. They played a good mix of old favorites ("King of Spain", "River Valley"), and brand-new songs ("Grudge", "Sad Girl") with the usual vim and vigor. In fact, there seemed to be more of an emphasis on the music than usual - the riffing and banter seemed to be kept to a minimum. Nothing wrong with that - the guys seem to keep getting better and better - touring endlessly must be good practice or somethng, 'cause they're all even playing each other's instruments perfectly these days! :-) Very funny stuff about the whole "Unite the Right" political movement in Canada (for those of you who don't know, the leftist FruFour are very politically active/aware), and various local banter. An amazing show, all and all, and I am still totally regretting not being able to attend the other 2 shows that weekend - I hear Susan Werner was a great opener on the Saturday, and that the Sunday benefit gig was beyond awesome (Sarah sang "Angel" with the Fruvous guys harmonizing! ARRRRGH - just kill me now! , and Susan Werner did a bluegrass medley with the guys as well). You folks (Steve, James, others?) who went to the other two shows, do post your reviews either here or on CanMus - I know there are others who couldn't make it that would love to hear about them. - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of navy-soup-digest V2 #29 ******************************
