"When it comes to paradigms, shifts happen." -- Alain Rossman ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 17:18:57 -0800 (PST) From: Bloo! 8-} Subject: Twin Moon - Lyrics and a bad attempt at analysis [Long] [Apologies for the length of what will surely be a pointless post from moi 8-}] {I shall not know war I space in the universe encompasses, Swallowing me up like an atom I thought I saw the end of the world} These distorted words (or something near to this - hard to hear) begin the beautiful new song "Twin Moon" by Sarah Slean. I have been playing this song a lot lately. I have found the lyrics to be interesting enough to capture my attention. Doing something I never do, I am giving a go at analyzing the lyrics. I don't know if this will be an interesting activity, but maybe you all have thoughts on the song/lyrics as well. [Hey Mr. Paper Better get your story straight We're not from the 60's And its Sarah with an "h"] Truth is, the first many times I heard this, I had the sense she was alluding to Mr. Paper from "Puff the Magic Dragon" - back in the 60's, if I recall. 8-} I also thought Sarah was saying "And its Sarah with an age", eg: Sarah casting aside youthfulness and being serious. Now I think this is a bit of a preamble for the song. I take "Mr. Paper" to be music critics, and the "story" could be how they treat her/musicians in general in the press. The line "We're not from the 60's" sounds like a specific incident that could actually have happened, while "And its Sarah with an 'h'" is a humorous jab at critics who blindly review music and quickly criticize without looking too deeply at the artist. [And oh, sometimes The way you see things The way you reach things The way you see things Its my heart] I like these lines. But I haven't the foggiest what the perspective... "You" can be taken as a general you, meaning it could be Sarah, the listeners, or the reviewers, or anybody. But I have a feeling it is about the nakedness an artist can feel when they lay their emotions bare in song. Their heart is right there, for all to see. [Oh, I fear Somehow you'll find the need To spit out my name Like a watermelon seed] This seems related to the last set - as an artist, you lay your heart and emotions out for all to see and experience. That HAS to be a leap of considerable faith; faith...and fear... that what you do will not be rejected. I like the seed analogy here. It is harsh enough in the lyrical flow to communicate rejection without interrupting the melody. [Oh, sometimes I think, "what am I doing?" This business of bleeding I'm dying for sure My heart] This part brings the theme thus far to a head: maybe the artist's uncertainty and own fears in the face of putting your heart on the line..."sometimes I think, 'what am I doing'?", where 'this business of bleeding' is the act of performing. "I'm dying for sure" - perhaps she feels she is giving too much of herself? [Chorus: Oh, Twin Moon You are my twin moon Take me up-sky So I can kiss you Drink your starlight. Light.] [Repeat Chorus] So far, I have yet to figure out how exactly this relates to the rest of the song. What might the "Twin Moon" possibly be? Is it the listeners? Performing is not a one-way affair; there is often (or should be) some sort of a two-way interaction between audience and performer. The chorus seems to be the one part of the song that doesn't directly say what it means. Still, the chorus lyrics paint a gorgeous mental image. 8-} [I want to show you I want to show you I want to show you My heart] Can I say I think this is really pretty sentiment? In a way, releasing the song early as a "thank you" sort of embodies what this song seems to say. Thank *you* Miss Slean, 8-} for you have created something special. - -------- I apologize for analyzing the hell out of this. It seems to be counter-intuitive to the nature of what the song is saying. But...I VERY seldom ever listen deeply to lyrics, as the music is what grabs and moves me. In this case, it was the lyrics too...so I wanted to know why. So am I totally smoking something here or perhaps engaging in pointless exercise? 8-} Anyone care? 8-} - -Brian Brian Wilson --------------------------"Those aren't Sex muffins! -Coach bloo@blooberry.com ---------------------Those aren't Love muffins! http://www.blooberry.com ---------------Those are just BLOOberry muffins!"
