It was a good show as they go, but disappointing for Sarah since there wasn't all that many people there. She was still on and up for it. ......Its these small out of home turf shows that prove someone's mettle. Sarah lead off the first set, yes two sets (I've only seen that once before when she wasn't playing switch off...) with something I'd never heard before, or at least couldn't figure out in my less-than-adequately-caffinated state... then into her strong suit of Weight, Me & Jerome, Black Boys on Mopeds (a Sinead O'Connor cover), Angel, Hi (formerly No Name (in B minor)), Ogoni Star (which Paul mentioned) and Universe. The second set was a bit more experimental. She did Sadie which I haven't heard in quite a while (almost a year in fact, Jan 26/98 was the last time I heard her play it; Wendy and Jude's B-Day/Pajama party at Holy Joe's, where a certain Fruv thought my PJ's were very Hefneresque ;-) ). Habit which I haven't heard in a while either (over a year, early September '97 - before I was consistent in dating my gig entries). Narcolepsy Weed, my request of Twin Moon and one I definitely have never _ever_ heard before "Hey Little Girl". It was quite nice; very gentle. :-) I'm looking _very_ much forward to the Dec. 16th gig at the Reverb. Be there or miss out BIG time. This was gig number 25 for me. So I'll tell the story... ...it was mid '97 and Steve Ito and I were planning our NxNE sprinting :-) Typically I surf the site intensively in the week before NxNE listening, literally to every single sound sample on there, reading every bio. Really, I do this. I'm driven to. Honest... ...and often I sprint between gigs, and run up stairs and encourage friends to bluff husky security guards... :-) and pant and have to use my inhaler... ...I digress So I get to Sarah's little clip and through a crappy set of computer speakers and a rough sound bite of Universe, I was quite literally blown away. My thought at the time, with none of my current knowledge or context was, "This is the next Tori Amos!" It was all there in that ephemeral little sample. Something I could've so easily missed. I e-mailed Steve and raved about her. And I put her on my list of people to see. And forgot completely about it. Now, it might've ended there. But. Steve and a few friends actually _listened_ to me and saw that Sarah was playing close to Steve's place at, was it the Freetimes? or C'est What? They saw her and were suitably blown away. Steve gets back to me and says we MUST, MUST see her at NxNE. Oddly there was this other singer playing with Sarah at those first shows... ...someone named Emm Gryner of all things ;-) ... but that's another story for another list. When I get to 50 I'll tell the whole, unadulterated story and 100, well, I'm gonna ask to write the set list at gig 100 ;-) James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ========================================================================== ------------------------------ End of navy-soup-digest V1 #35 ******************************
