Anyone care to speculate / know >what her other influences are? I find Sarah's musical taste to be somewhat inscrutable and constantly find myself surprised by what she likes (and doesn't like). Now which of these she would classify as "influences" I'm not sure, but I can at least shed some light on a few of the artists she likes... Glenn Gould Jeff Buckley These two guys along with Radiohead form a sort of holy trinity as far as Sarah is concerned... Emm Gryner (of course) Noah Mintz (of hHead and Noah's Arkweld) Tori Amos (you could see that one coming a mile away) Tory Cassis (this Tory's a guy!) Gandharvas (these guys are pretty loud... I was rather surprised when Sarah complimented me on my Gandharvas shirt one day) Tom Waits Bach (I don't know who her other 'classical' favourites are) Sheila Chandra (another surprise!) Joni Mitchell Veda Hille Kinnie Starr Treble Charger Red Autumn Fall (the best Calgarian band in Toronto!) Mia Sheard Rufus Wainwright (at least she went nuts about him when I played my CD for her... dunno if she ever went out and picked up his album) Sinead O'Connor That's all that I can think of offhand. Actually some of the artists she *doesn't* like surprises me more than than those she *does*, but I won't get into those. She's influenced by writers too. Her song "Me and Jerome" is about the legendary writer and recluse J.D. Salinger. Oh, one more to add to the list... "Martin" Who is just some random shy guy in the U of T music program. Now Sarah and Martin... well... as they say on the Riverbank... "but that's another story." Steve P.S. now that actually sounds like a question ideally suited for a Sarah Slean FAQ; perhaps it's about time to make one? Everyone feel free to contribute questions they feel belong in a Sarah FAQ. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Oct 1998 00:20:26 -0500 (EST) From: 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu Subject: Re: sarah's influences Who *isn't* influenced by Emm, Jeff Buckely, and Glenn Gould? :) Not to mention Kinnie! Woohoo! I *love* Jeff Buckely (And most people here know how i feel about emm so I don't need to go there). I just got two of the live imports in the mail and they are amazing. If anyone doesn't have his Sketches CD, *please* do yourself a favor and pick it up. The song "You and I" sounds like he is singing from the grave. I mean, that probably sounds totally weird and morbid, but when you hear it listen to the words and the reverb, that's what it sounds like to me...it's probably one of the most powerful songs I've heard in my life... The Tori influence was obvious but I hope she isn't labeled too much when she gets a little bit bigger as a "tori clone" or whatever because I think her music is very different from Tori's. I love Tori, but after awhile all of her songs kind of sound the same and she doesn't have ... I don't know, Sarah has a lot of variety in her music, both lyrically and musically, and she's clearly very passionate about it... Mmm...Radiohead. Listening to John XXIII on repeat :) For the Sarah FAQ: When will the LP be out? :) jessica n. weiser http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "i'm a loser at love, i'm a flower in the mud" -sheryl crow ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 08:56:24 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: OLP: Julia On Mon, 5 Oct 1998, Steve I wrote: > Bach (I don't know who her other 'classical' favourites are) Arg, I shoulda remembered this, she went all "squirrelly" when I mentioned the Goldberg Variations. :-) I'm gonna have to remember to write more down, Sarah and I talked about this a great deal once... > She's influenced by writers too. Oh, for those of you who don't know, Sarah is quite the artist as well, she did the artwork for the Universe CD/EP.
