Its length at 12 songs its easily the longest Sarah gig in recent memory. And 3 new songs. I'm growing more impressed with the technical part of the orchestration each time I hear them. Its interesting to hear Sarah alone; to hear the most distilled versions of the songs, but I'm struck by the simple and complex beauties of her orchestrations. I'm beginning to think this is where her real talent lies. Certainly its helped her reach new heights, since over the last couple of months she has improved, greatly. Which, one year 1/4 years ago, would've been inconceivable. > a virtual Dar Williams, that girl. Um, no. She's very much Sarah Slean. :-) James. Sarah S concert #23! And still counting! (Can never quite make that out.) This Being the Rich and Textured History of Backing Up Sarah Slean Sarah has had a few backup singers. Sharon Tiessen was Sarah's cellist and did backup on some of the tracks on Universe. Sjanie McInnes did backup for Sarah off and on for about the last 8 months or so, she started at one of the first gigs to feature more orchestration, way back at C'Est What either late last year, or very early this year. Sarah's current backup singer, at least for last Thursday's Reverb gig was Jennifer S (oh geez I cannot believe I forgot, I made a definite point to ask Sarah that too, geez! serves me right for not writing it down!), model/actress/singer, you may recognize her from a McDonald's commercial (the one with the pop up balloons) or more recently from the diner-based Bingo commerical. And yes, she _is_ quite attractive, but I'm going to have to put you all under the same geis as I am: no drooling during sets! Jill :D ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Oct 1998 18:45:53 -0400 From: Paul Schreiber Subject: Sarah's Reverb Show Somebody almost missed their train for work on Friday, :) but it was worth it. I really liked Sarah's show on Thursday. Went to bed at 1:38 in the morning. First, I ran into like a zillion people I knew: Ed, Dave and Avery came up from Waterloo[*]; Amanda; Steve, Rachel, Gian and James. I (finally) met Heather. Said hi to Kevin Fox again. Chatted with Sarah for a bit. Some guy, also named Steve, recognized me from being at some previous Sarah show. The effect, I pointed out to Steve (Ito), was really cool. [*] we planned this, so i didn't "run into" them technically :) I know (pun noted) James has posted a setlist, but some notes on what I remembered: - - Bonnie's Song. I had asked someone about what song in Sarah's bio refers to evil gas companies, and they told me about Bonnie's Song, but that Sarah hadn't played it in a while. She has played it at the last two shows I've been to. - - The opening song was Pie Jesu, done by the instrumental string quartet only, no Sarah. It was really nice - - Julia (OLP cover). Sarah made some note about not usually doing this/not having done it in a long time. - - Playing cards with judas - - She did most of "Universe": Universe, Weight, I Know, Angel, John xxiii. Sarah had a new song about love; she referred to child's red light-green light game, and how love can happen unexpectedly. Somewhere around this, she mentioned having recently fallen in love, and the guy told her "I have nothing to offer you." She said her reply was "I don't need you to buy me dinner. I just need you to love me." I think this the first time I've heard something like that from her. This is neat. She did the mallet song -- the one with the "Martin" story -- which she didn't tell. Her string section, she noted, go to U of T, and "they know Martin." Sarah used a lyric sheet for one of her songs, 'cause it was so new. This was only show five for me; it's easily #2 on my list, with #1 being the Waterloo show. Much nicer than the last Reverb show I went to in May. I was afraid she wasn't going to tell any stories, because she more or less didn't for the first half of the set, but she did near the end. Yay! The thing is, I love stories with my music, which is probably one of the reasons I'm such a big fan of Steve Poltz. : - ) Paul shad 96c / 3A CS / mac activist / eda / fumbler fan of / jewel / sophie b. hawkins / sarah slean / steve poltz / / x-files / buffy / dawson's creek / habs / bills / 49ers / t h i n k d i f f e r e n t.
