I'll be honest, this review is going to suck... The show was really great, but I was a bit selfish. I didn't take too much time to study the coffee house, the crowd, or try to memorize little details... I figured that this would be last show I would get to see for awhile, so I watched her play, and had a great time. I had brought a recorder, but ended up leaving it in my car, partly because I forgot it... So, if you find this a bit lacking, all I can say is that you should have been there. :-) So, anyway I got into town a bit early and ended up hanging out with Luna and her roommate, Christophe,r while she got ready for the show. How does one get ready for a show? Perhaps practice the setlist? Maybe read a bit of Checkhov to set the mood? Or light some incense and just relax? Well, last night getting ready for the show entailed listening to the Powerpuff Girls sing, and trying to convince people in the room to sing with her... several, several times. (you know, each person taking the part of one of the girls..) Having ran along a rather busy I-45 to hug a grown man, slept with plywood cows and stuffed dogs (in the same night), and hitchhiked in New Jersey this turn of events did not faze me, but I did think it would be something cool to see on "Behind the Music" Having got our minds right with the Powerpuff music we headed over to Ruta Maya. Ruta Maya turned out to be a fairly small coffee house about two blocks from the famed 6th Street. The stage was fairly large, and in line with the entrance, so passers by could glance in and see the show. Christopher and Luna started setting up, but none of us could make the house sound system work at first. The countergirl knew nothing about it, and none of us could do more than stare at the sound board with dumb expressions. Soon though, Craig walked in and in moments everything seemed to be working.. (speaking of which, Craig, sorry I didn't get a chance to say 'ello.. It's been awhile..) Luna played a full set which included the new songs: Angels in the water Little Leaf Chrissie's Bathtub along with older stuff like, Mariposa, Goddess, biscuit Song Life is a stranger Delia, Blackstar (which was especially good) Gypsy Privacy Woman Who Can Cook Stargazing Quality Time Why are you Loving me I'll always be your girl, Cow-Cow boogie (during which a small child ended up dancing at the foot of the stage, it was quite the Kodak moment, but my camara was sitting in my car beside my recorder) and a Gershwin cover. - --- I did not take a full count, but around the middle of the set there seemed to be about twenty or so people in the audience, and by the end the number had grown to around thirty or so, not counting those standing on the side walk... Afterwards we all hungout around the shop, talking to people, watching everyone walking along the street and so forth, and I got to hear a very disjointed synopsis of the PowerPuff Girls, and supporting characters, which, if nothing else has given me new reason to switch from the History Channel to Cartoon Network. I left Austin a bit after midnight for Abilene, stopping along the way to play with snakes crossing the road, and all that good stuff.... - ----------------------------- On a side note, our beloved Joe is back from Walkabout! He got in yesterday morning. I believe he was a stowaway on the US Mail truck. Joe seemed to be in fine spirits, and even seems to have forgiven Luna for dumping him in San Antonio a couple of months ago... anyway... rowdy ------------------------------ End of mariposa-digest V1 #36 *****************************
