Let me clear up a bit of confusion here (Seems to be abundant), the line
I put out there was in reference to a scene in the movie "Stripes". A Mann
lister made a reference to "Lighten up Francis" for which I added the line
"Any of you Homo's touch my Stuff" that was said in the movie just before
that.

If it offended anyone I am truly sorry (especially to Bill) , but in a
forum that spent 3-4 freak'n weeks discussing which "Rock Stars" were gay or
not. The double standard for topics in here is amazing, IT WAS A JOKE
PEOPLE!!! It wasn't a putdown of anything or anybody. It was a VERY funny
scene in a movie, maybe some folks in here should go rent the movie and
LIGHTEN up a bit.... I think there are a few folks in here who could use a
laugh...

I thought Bill's response was funny, sorry folks. "Lighten Up Francis"
is a phrase I use a lot, for those who don't UNDERSTAND what that's about.
The movie is "Stripes" it's funny, it's got LOT's of 1 liners, granted most
of its "Guy" humor but funny none the less....

Thank you Andrea and others who have responded,
As the guy who wrote the original message "Phil Collins Must Die!",
that these guys Bill and whomever responded to, and since I make
no mention of sexuality-hetero or gay-whatsoever, I'm at a loss
as to what the "homo" remarks are in regards to.

What does this post have to do with Aimee, or, for that matter, ANYTHING
musically??

For the past several months I have been listening to Aimee non stop. Most of
my friends are sick of hearing her. They're lose. But today I was driving
with a friend who has been very critical of Aimee calling her music boring
and dull. I was playing a new tape that I had made with the full version of
B#2 that I got at her concert. The first song on the tape is Ghost World. He
says to me halfway through the song, "This is Aimee Mann?" I proudly said,
"Sure is!" He goes on to say, "You know this song is really good! I'll bet
if she releases this as a single it will take off and be huge hit."

I never been a person to pick hits, most of the time my favorite songs are
usually the songs that never get played. I just wonder if radio would
embrace any song off B#2 due to the politics of the business? Imagine what a
wake up call it would be to the industry to see an independently released
song top the charts!

I would argue that age has nothing to do with whether or not
one can appreciate quality -- whatever that is -- in music.
Sure, we happen to be in a time right now where a certain kind
of bubblegum pop is hugely popular, but my friend's 13-year old
daughter loves Dar Williams and Steve Earle. My four-year old
digs Fountains of Wayne way more than Brittney Spears. And,
old man that I am, I actually liked some of the first Hanson
album becuase the songs had good pop hooks.
|
|As for Aimee in spandex and tube tops, she's an adult making
pop music for adults and isn't really trying to sell to the teenybopper
crowd. And she already kinda did that gig with the first 'Til
Tuesday record, and don't think her image didn't help get that
record noticed.

Bubblegum Pop is always in (meaning profitable and popular). Whether it is
Menudo, Debbie Gibson, The Partridge Family, Leif Garret or N'Sync. There is
always going to be a portion of the industry that gears to the pre-teen and
teen age group.

]]My four-year old digs Fountains of Wayne way more than Brittney Spears[[
There is always an exception to the rule!

This is a ridiculous statement akin to the NRA'rs that say "guns don't kill
people, people kill people." C'mon - we know that most MP3's out there are
illegal. A product that makes it easy to find MP3's that other people make,
no matter what the stated purpose, is a product that makes it wasy to steal
from artists. Napster's argument sounds a lot like those gunmakers that
make the $70 guns and explain that they are making guns available for
everyone, even the poor; ignoring the fact that their guns are mostly used
for crime.

Unfortunately the labels aren't smart enough to realize that the best way to
combat this problem is to fully support digital music. If they spent half
the effort figuring out a way to make money at it, as they do trying to end
it, they would solve the problem, and have a little time to tackle world
peace.

Since all of the hubub - and backtracking into
personal-faves for movie references, etc...
Perhaps the initial remark about Phil's mortality -
was indeed itself - a reference...Mojo Nixon's Don
Henley thing...Anybody remember that ?
Could be, it was - from its 'genesis', a reference -
misunderstood, and mis-taken...? There must be some
misunderstanding...?
It's an easy pit to step-into...like, for the
introduction to the father of the new girl...I always
say "We've come for your daughter Chuck!"
To date, not a one has 'gotten' it...? But then - none
were "chuck"s ???

Image has much to do with whether or not a performer is successful. If we
lived in a world where it didn't matter, those artists wouldn't spend so much
time on it. Teenagers aren't the only ones affected by image either. They
just happen to be the most obvious about it.

Good fluff?:-) Well-made confection? Quality is a relative term. I think a
person's choice of music has more to do with personal taste than quality. On
that same note, artfullness is dependent upon personal taste and a personal
sense of values as well.

And just to clarify, I never thought that britney or nsync were all there was
to "pop" music, just that I happen to enjoy their (dare I say it music
sometimes.

] I certainly don't begrudge anyone their guilty musical
] pleasures (since I indulge in a few myself :-) but I'd like to point
] out that there is more to "pop" music than Brittney and N'Sync. The
] problem I have with the aforementioned artists is not that they
] perform fluffy pop but that they are simply marketing devices... more
] energy is spent determining what sort of haircuts they're to sport
] than what sort of music they are to perform. Brittney's breasts are
] lovely, artificial or not, but I don't see how they are suppoesd to

]
] And here's the thing: I don't believe that all music needs to be deep,
] but if I am to indulge my musical sweet tooth, I would prefer to
] consume a well made confection.
]
] Case in point: The new record by Catatonia ("equally cursed
] and blessed"). This is a Welsh pop band, with this totally out-there
] female vocalist... the lyrics range from clever to intolerably goofy,
] and the record certainly qualifies as fluff, but... there is a
] joyousness, and an ARTFULNESS to this specimen of mindless pop that
] none of these singing haircuts can hope to touch.
]
] There is GOOD FLUFF out there, folks: look for it!
