Comparing notes with a fellow MMer who saw Patty in L.A., our three-person consensus was "pretty good". At the risk of being branded a heretic, "pretty good" is a description I never expected to assign to a Patty Griffin performance, but there you have it. I was actually relieved that I hadn't invited any would-be Patty converts to join us, because the usual transcendent moments were few and the show ended before 10 p.m. The emphasis on American Kid material was expected, but no Wild Old Dog? I heard she'd been playing the sublime Trapeze, but the only CRT song we got was Heavenly Day. The sure-fire crowd-pleaser No Bad News was MIA. Impossible Dream was represented by Standing and Mother Of God, and I counted only her extended rendition of Flaming Red from the first three studio releases. I loved her take on the standard Glory Of Love, and the new Mando Song #1 is promising, but the overall set list left us wanting so much more. There may be folks out there who prefer Mother Of God to stuff like Long Ride Home, When It Don't Come Easy and Mary, but I suspect they're in the minority. Don't get me wrong. Patty owes us absolutely nothing, and she has already enriched our lives in ways that we could never repay. I can understand not wanting to play the same old material night after night, but of the numerous PG shows that I've attended, I believe this one featured by far the fewest songs that I was truly excited to hear.
