Technology is now the excuse to disregard societal ettiquette in regards to previously devised forms of electronic communication? I often use my iPhone to reply to the mad-mission, ecto or Jewel list here at smoe.org. I also take the time, MAYBE a minute, to edit the quoted text appropriately. If smartphone or tablet users cannot have the time to do the same - for crying out loud, it's a minute! - then maybe they should just not do it at all right then. We do not tolerate bad ettiquitte from device users in the movies or a stage play, or other places that quiet is the norm...why then should bad nettiquette in an environment invented way before the device was, be tolerated? I've also long considered it a "problem" in general, and not just the digest readers. It just makes sense to show only quoted text to support your point/reply or to serve as a reminder of what your post is replying to.. Not everyone reads every word of a post, and if you are quoting a looooong post but are referring to just a part of it in the text of your reply, by quoting the entire long post, you are forcing the reader of YOUR post to re--read more than they should have to. Bottom line, quoting an entire post is just being lazy and in some cases wasting the times of others too. And I won't even get into the wasted space taken up on the smoe.org hardware where TWO copies of every post is archived...each individual post AND of course, the digest that is later created. All that said, I still believe that on a slow list like this, the digest is almost pointless as a subscription. Some lists here even do not allow people to sub to the digest, it's only there as a reference tool online. None the less, new technology devices or not, poor nettiquette is still poor nettiquette, in my opinionm anyway.
