It was 2001 at the Beacon Theatre in New York. Sheryl Crow was one of the performers and had had a fair bit of commercial success at that time. Patty was not as well known to many in the audience, and certainly was not as commercially successful as Sheryl Crow. After Patty did an amazing performance of "Top of the World" to great audience appreciation, from my seat in the second row I saw Sheryl Crow turn to Steve Earle and say "I can't go next" I took this to mean "I can't follow that". As I am writing this it occurs to me that perhaps she was overcome by emotioneither way a great compliment to Patty.
