I was not so much a fan of Flaming Red - just too over-produced. I love, love, love all of the songs on 1000 kisses, A Kiss in Time, Impossible Dream and Children Running Through. I play these all the time and just never get tired of them. I'm not crazy about her and Robert Plant's collaboration - it's just too rough. I love Patty with just Patty - She doesn't need anybody else to try to make it any better, as I feel she has the most amazing voice out there. I saw her performance on Tonight Show and didn't think it was one of her best. If you're trying to garner a larger fan base, I would not have made the choice of "Don't Let Me Die in Florida" to showcase myself. I realize she is promoting her new album and I have not heard it yet (it's coming!), but I hope it's going to lend itself more like my favorite albums and not the rough stuff... Actually, I think a collaboration with Jimmy LaFave would be Ahhhh..... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 May 2013 13:31:19 -0700 (PDT) From: Gina Luzzi Subject: Re: MM: Tonight Show appearance autolearn=failed version=3.1.5 X-Greylist: Delayed for 00:03:07 by milter-greylist-2.0 (smoe.org [199.201.145.78]); Thu, 09 May 2013 16:34:54 -0400 (EDT) X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative by demime 0.97c-p1 X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain Sender: owner-mad-mission@smoe.org Precedence: bulk I can agree with some of your points. I had never heard the song before that performance and had a hard time parsing the lyrics. Patty always has interesting lyrics, so I was disappointed they weren't more clear.B I might get in trouble for this, but I really have no desire to see Robert Plant perform with her. I don't dislike his past work or his voice. But I did not care for his collaboration with Allison Krauss and thought he was the reason that many of those songs sounded like they had the life sucked out of them. I just prefer to see and hear Patty shine on her own without unnecessary distractions. ________________________________ From: Lawrence Israelson To: mad-mission@smoe.org Sent: Thursday, May 9, 2013 12:56 PM Subject: MM: Tonight Show appearance Yes, I realize that it's presumptuous of me to play armchair quarterback. I've never had the responsibility of putting together an album-cutting the lesser material, sequencing, choosing the first single, etc. That said, in my opinion there has always been a wide gulf between the quality of Patty's music and the effectiveness of her marketing. This week's Tonight Show appearance struck me as the latest in a long line of missed opportunities. Pounce on me if I'm out of line, but is there anybody on this list that feels that was the most effective way to introduce "American Kid" to millions of potential buyers? Think of it this way: if you were trying to "hook" somebody on Patty Griffin, or just trying to convince someone to check out her new CD, would your introductory song be "Don't Let Me Die In Florida"? As I see it, Patty's greatest strengths are 1) her beautiful, versatile and expressive voice, and 2) her ability to expose universal truths in a deceptively simple phrase (for example, "How hard would it have been to say some kinder words instead?"). With a national stage, how about saying, "I wrote this for my father," and performing "Go Wherever You Wanna Go"? Or walking out with just an acoustic guitar and singing the heart-rending "Wild Old Dog"? Or even the far less substantial "Get Ready Marie", playfully delivering some of the lines with a guttural French accent the way she sometimes does in her live shows? Plus, shameless though it might have been, a tambourine-rattling Robert Plant in the background could have helped, too. OK, end of rant. Larry I in L.A.

Just watched it. Haven't heard the album yet (I'm kind of afraid that it won't live up to my expectations, so I've been pushing it off), and don't have strong feelings yet about this song. But damn, it's good to see Patty back in action. She doesn't even look like she's aged a day since I last saw her (2007?). And I love the "Lacquer Thinner" instrument. Very cool. Although I am sad that it seems she's not playing any proper NYC concerts. A free outdoor show doesn't cut it. Usually that just means crappy sound and a noisy, disinterested, drunk crowd. Normally I wouldn't even bother with those types of concerts, but how can I miss out on Patty?! I was really hoping to see her in a proper venue, but that doesn't seem likely. Makes no sense -- this is NYC, for f***'s sake! Sigh. - -Lisa Sent from my iPhone ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V16 #41 *********************************
