With regards to Up To The Mountain- The situation with this song makes me think of a line from the movie Crazy Heart. The Jeff Bridges character says something about how the best songs immediately sound familiar, as if they have been around forever. I think that is what has happened with Up To The Mountain, it sounds like a gospel standard that is timeless, so people assume that's what it is. Even when Children Running Through first came out, I think I read somewhere that Patty was covering it, and that it had been written by someone else. Personally, I didn't like Crystal Bowersox's version much. She must have had a pretty severe time limit, otherwise I can't explain why she would chop the song up the way she did. It really lost a lot of the energy and emotional arc for me. I think Crystal is a great performer and she has a beautiful voice. I loved her cover of Bobby McGee earlier in the season. It's too bad she didn't win. With regards to Downtown Church- I have to say that the album wasn't what I was expecting, and I didn't listen to it much when I first bought it. I really like gospel music and was hoping for more of a straight up traditional gospel album, with a choir backing Patty, maybe some Carter Family songs thrown in. However, I've started listening to it again lately and it has really grown on me. Like so many of Patty's albums, I always find one or two songs that I love immediately, but after listening repeatedly I find others that really resonate with me. I immediately loved We Shall All Be Reunited on Downtown Church, but lately I can't stop listening to Little Fire and If I Had My Way. Here's a question from left field- does anyone know where to find a copy of the Austin City Limits episode where Patty performs with Bob Schneider? I just found a mention of it on the web, and they are two of my favorites. I'd love to see them perform together.
