I hope those of you that went had a wonderful time. I wandered onto youtube and saw videos of what I missed. Thank you if you shared! Bridget ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Mar 2009 21:09:54 -0700 From: "Lawrence Israelson" Subject: MM: Patty on Cayamo Happy 45th, Patty! (By the time this gets posted to the list, however, it will likely already be St. Patrick's Day in many time zones--hmmm, should March 16 be designated "St. Patricia's Day"?) Cayamo was once again fantastic, and I'm already pining for next year. Saw Patty (accompanied by Doug Lancio) on three consecutive nights, chatted several times with Dana from Antioch and met her daughter Jayne, and had a couple of phone conversations with Lisa from Ojai (way to represent, California MMers!). Patty played similar sets on March 4 and 6, with an almost entirely different setlist on Thursday the 5th. I liked the song selection for that middle night the best, but felt Patty gave her best performance of the trip on night one. She seemed much healthier than during Cayamo 2008, and her phrasing was impeccable, but she didn't attempt very many of the show-stopping notes heard on recordings like "When It Don't Come Easy". Also, no "No Bad News" was bad news for me, and there were few selections from the pre-"1000 Kisses" era. That first night was very atypical, as Patty was escorted onto the stage by a man in a fat suit (complete with bikini!) who fanned her with a palm frond, dangled grapes above her open mouth, and later fetched cupcakes from the buffet. The joke was that Patty supposedly demanded a 600-pound cabana boy as a condition for her return to Cayamo. Later in the set--brace yourselves--Patty introduced a new song that had the audience laughing out loud. Many of the other performers on the ship, including the headliners, made reference to Patty's greatness, and before that Thursday show Sister Hazel's Ken Block introduced her with an anecdote about punching up LWG at an in-store listening station and being blown away by "Moses". In the following set lists, titles in quotation marks are my best guesses for new (or at least new to me) Patty originals. My notes seem a lot less legible than they did two weeks ago, so if anybody spots a mistake, don't be shy. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4 Wade In The Water (traditional) Long Ride Home I Flew Over Our House Last Night (Tom T. Hall) Making Pies Chief "Not A Bad Man" (haunting song about returning war veteran) Back-Water Blues (Bessie Smith) "Our Love Is A Dud" (funny but insightful) "I'm Gonna Miss You" Rain Truth No. 2 Let Him Fly I Smell A Rat (blues cover) Up To The Mountain (MLK Song) THURSDAY, MARCH 5 If I Had My Way, I'd Tear This Building Down (Blind Willie Johnson?) Trapeze When It Don't Come Easy Little God Heavenly Day "Our Love Is A Dud" "Not A Bad Man" Love Throw A Line Burgundy Shoes Kite Song Waiting For My Child (traditional) Stay On The Ride Top Of The World Mary Flaming Red Tomorrow Night FRIDAY, MARCH 6 If I Had My Way, I'd Tear This Building Down (Blind Willie Johnson?) Truth No. 2 I Flew Over Our House Last Night (Tom T. Hall) Waiting For My Child (traditional) "Not A Bad Man" Love Throw A Line Heavenly Day Making Pies House Of Gold (Hank Williams) "I'm Gonna Miss You" Back-Water Blues (Bessie Smith) Rain Nobody's Crying ??? (new song with rain prominently mentioned--other than that I'm now completely blank) Let Him Fly Because of Buddy Miller's absence, after Patty's Friday set there was a very enjoyable sort of "encore/revue" where nearly all the Cayamo artists who weren't committed to perform elsewhere on the ship came out and generally paid tribute to Buddy with songs that Buddy had played or recommended. Patty was given the last slot (although Brandi Carlile's rendition of "Hallelujah" that night was a very tough act to follow) and performed two cover songs, details of which are mostly lost in the mists of time. The last one was a duet with Joe Ely (and written by Billie Joe Shaver, I believe)...and that's all I've got.
