Draft seems to have been lost in the internet ether, so I have to start over. Had no problem finding my sea legs, but did have a problem finding my party legs. A bit lethargic the 1st day , & spent most of the 4th day in bed. Glad Patty didn't play until the 5th day. Set List 2/7/08 : Kite Song - piano Burgundy Shoes - piano When it Don't Come Easy Chief Rain Stay on the Ride Till Morning ? ( new song ) Backwater Blues Long Ride Home Heavenly Day Tony No Bad News Love throw a Line Mary Encore Up to the Mountain - solo Not sure about solos b/c she would be well into some songs when someone else would join her, i.e. Buddy Miller on BB, making his guitar sound like a trombone. Also distracted b/c I lost my pen after the 2nd song, & was trying to remember the set list until I found it again near the end. Checked mine with Gillian's after the show , so it's correct. Always like KS, but it wasn't up to usual standards. Seemed to move a bit too fast , & the piano parts seemed different.SOTR , like "Runnin' with the Amazons", isn't one of my favorites , but Patty's vocals on them are great, I'm guessing b/c she seems to enjoy singing them so much. Ridin' might be that elusive hit single if she ever records it.Liked the new song a lot. BB too, wasn't one of her best versions, possibly due to flu-induced throat probs, which showed up a few times, most notably on Mary , when she suddenly stopped, coughed a few times , then started again. Also seemed limited on UTTM a few times , but not enough to keep it from being my fav in the set. A masterpiece song.NBN was my other highlight.Patty's mike was set back from the front of the stage , so thanks to soundman Roy Taylor for placing my rose & peanut M&M's near it. Didn't want to go onstage & be accosted by security. Patty did say "thank you for the rose" but I missed it due to some distraction or another. The guy next to me saw me take it up , & alerted me. Patty made a number of comments about the ship. When she first sat down at the piano, she said it felt like she was above the biggest subway in the world. No doubt harkening back to her days playing at the Fez in NYC, which was subject to the occasional rumble of the subway.Almost lost her balance once, & threw up her arms to steady herself. Suggesting she looked drunk, she said; "cheap date". Also commented once that her shoe choice might have been a little too ambitious. Band was Doug , Michael & John Dederick on piano. Buddy joined on guitar a few times. Emmylou came in for harmony on LRH & Mary, & I think it was Shawn Colvin who also came in for Mary. Hope I can finish up today. Ain't nothin' left at all In the end of being proud. Patty Griffin "Long Ride Home" Don ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2008 15:44:30 -0500 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Cruise report III Bonus show on Sat 2/09 was mostly interview, probably due to her throat probs.I was upset at first , b/c it was just Patty & her guitar. Don't get much of that anymore. Felt differently after it was over. Liked the intimate feel in the room as Patty talked freely. She did "Up to the Mountain", "J'irai la Voir un Jour" & about 6 lines from "Cat's Out of the Bag" b/c she couldn't remember the lines. Said "Cat" was probably the first song she ever wrote , & it was "really bad". I disagree. Also said her music was influenced by Rickie Lee Jones at the time.Songs were great , but I do like "J'irai" better on piano. She said "J'irai" was probably the first song she remembers hearing , As her grandmother used to sing it around the house. Also confirmed that Tony was an actual classmate in her homeroom.Read of his suicide when she was 21 & felt remorse that she never noticed him in his desperation. Had a long discussion about her songwriting process, & said she doesn't write much on the road & around music , but does better when she's just around the house & it just starts to come to her as she's relaxing or doing something else. Said she liked living in her private world with her songs as she develops them, & feels a sadness when she has to turn them out to the rest of world for the collaborative process that results in the final arrangement. Also told us that she liked poetry when she was young & knew she wanted to be a singer at 12, so she practiced singing from then on. Mine was the late show , but I managed to get in the early show on Saturday. I told the powers that be that "I had to report to the people !!" Just kidding : ) Was waiting in line to be let in if there were open seats after the 3rd song when someone passed out tix for center balcony. Set list 2/09/08: Summertime - piano - solo Lord Come Stay by My Side ? (new song or cover) piano - solo Get Yourself Another Fool Stay on the Ride Useless Desires Flaming Red Time Turns Us Down ? (new song or cover) Free When it Don't Come Easy Tony Tomorrow Night Mil Besos Love throw a Line Truth #2 Encore Let Him Fly Mary Glad I got in. Liked the set better than the first, despite no "Up to the Mountain". "Summertime" was very good, but I have to opine that Janis still owns it. Don't remember the unfamiliar ones much, except to say that I liked them.Highlights for me were GYAF, FR, Free, TN, Truth #2 & LHF. Patty & Doug knocked out FR, & I always like that bluesy opening. When they do that opening, just a few fans get it right off, then a few more when she says flaming red. Most react when they start the familiar upbeat part. When I first started following Patty , I used to yell out her name a lot, after a great song. I've been quiet lately , but when I heard someone yell out "Ruby's Arms" between songs, I had to let out a resounding "yeah!!". Patty played MB in response to a written request from a couple who delayed their wedding so they could honeymoon on the cruise. Bet that lit them up! She said there was some grumbling about the boat, but that she was "glad to be on this damn boat" : ) Was surprised that she tried UD. A lot of intense vocals in it. I could tell her voice was limited thru a lot of it, & someone nearby said she sounded flat. Have a few notes here that I can't figure out. One just says Jesus & I have no clue. I have to stop using shorthand & write things out. The old gray matter just ain't what it used to be. Same supporting cast except for Brandi Carlile joining Emmylou for harmony on Mary. And when the last bird falls And the last siren sounds Someone will say what's been said before It's only love we were looking for Patty Griffin "When it Don't Come Easy" Don ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2008 17:35:53 -0500 From: "Emily Cooper" Subject: Re: MM: Cruise report IIII Hi I think the "Jesus" you wrote down refers to the other new one she played (not that that's much help since she didn't give it a name). I also had late show bracelets but also got into the early show thanks to an Emmylou fan (so glad I did). Although she was still recovering, I thought the 2.09.08 show was one of her best, she truly seemed to appreciate the audience. It was also great that she did Truth #2 & Fly after talking about other artists covering her work earlier in her bonus show. She mentioned that she thought the Dixie Chicks did justice to Truth and that her attitude towards others covering her work that "This may sound shallow but it kind of depends who the artist is." It was a great, and not so subtle reference to Jessica Simpson's lackluster Fly. It was great to hear Patty do it justice later that night. If Patty is on the boat again next year I'll be there. - -E On Feb 12, 2008 4:58 PM, Don Henn wrote: > Cruisers only had tix for early shows or the late > shows. Even a message or bulletin board would have helped a lot. Got in touch with Dana via cell phone while we were still in port & ran into Dr. J early on. Spent most of my time hanging out with them. Posting on the net got us in touch with Bruce & Larry, & we arranged a dinner meeting.Had a nice dinner with Dana & daughter Arielle, Bruce & Maria, Larry & Connie, Dr. J & mother Joan, & Vickie. Met a # of others during the trip. Gillian, Allison, Kris, Nicole, Roy & Doug, who reminded me that some live vicariously thru my posts. More incentive to post reviews in a timely manner. Was appalled when I realized that I had not only forgotten my Patty T-shirts, but failed to tell all to look for my flaming red boots. Was going to do penance by getting a temporary tattoo, when I had this exchange: How much to get Patty Griffin written in red on my forearm? I'M SORRY WE DON'T HAVE THAT ONE I don't understand WE ONLY HAVE STENCILS Can't you write? I'M SORRY WE DON'T HAVE THAT ONE WE ONLY DO STENCILS hmmmm... Only caught half of Emmylou's show b/c I had to finish packing to meet the deadline for ship's handling. She & Shawn Mullins were my fav headliners after Patty. Didn't know Shawn's music before , but stayed thru his whole show. Figured Patty & Emmylou would show for Buddy Miller, who I also like, but just wasn't up to it.After them, my favs were 2 who performed at an open mike. Kate Graves , who reminds me of Nancy Micciula, who some of you might know , & Hill Roberts, who has a great blues voice & sings with a band in the Atlanta area. Many dead ends on the ship. I'm guessing that on half or more of the decks, you can't get from one end to the other w/o going on another deck first. Someone on the staff told me that Patty's bonus show went faster than any artist. She's movin' on up! Saw Doug, Michael & Roy on the ship , but not Patty. Can't blame her. Saw video of interviews off of the ship, & there was this one guy with big goofy glasses that Elton John would have been proud of. "I'm going on this cruise to have dinner with Patty Griffin. See these glasses Patty? Look for them. Find me. I'll be looking for your red hair. I'll find you". hmmmmm... Only got off the ship to get some items for my ladyfriend who couldn't go, but did have a drink & some peel n' eat shrimp at a local Margaritaville. Seemed like a fun place. Could've stayed there all day & got drunk, but needed my rest & my music. Guess that's about it, except to thank Patty for fighting thru her flu & giving us her best. Thank you, Patty.
