Honorable Mention (just below top ten) for best pop CD: Children Running Through #6 best pop concert: Patty Griffin April 16 at Byham Theater (this ranking was a co-selection as a sort of doubleheader with a concert by the group Blue Cheer later that evening) That's good. I still am amazed at CTR, No Bad News and Heavenly Day not making, for the most part, year-end top lists. WYEP did have CTR in their top 20. Patty does rock Pittsburgh..... _________________________________________________________________ Get the power of Windows + Web with the new Windows Live. http://www.windowslive.com?ocid=TXT_TAGHM_Wave2_powerofwindows_012008 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2008 21:48:21 -0800 From: "Lawrence Israelson" Subject: MM: Top 10 lists/metacritic.com Like our friend in Pittsburgh, I've been somewhat bothered by the lack of CRT appearances on various year-end lists. Of course, numerical rankings aren't the be-all and end-all, but the results posted at metacritic.com are very schizophrenic. While the album received an average score of 87 based on 13 "professional" reviews (which makes it one of five releases occupying slots five through nine of the website's "top scorers" for 2007), unless my eyes deceive me CRT doesn't appear on *even one* of the 44 individual critic's Top 10s listed there, and that includes a whopping 10 music journalists from the sorta-hometown Austin Chronicle. To make matters worse, even though the average "user rating" (8.7) is consistent with the pros, as of Monday evening the first two user "reviews" were as follows: "Leslie S. gave it a 1. She is dreadful..saw her w John Prine last night..she screeched and was so horribly ill prepared as to both the one duet with Prine..too stoned to remember the words...real downer..what is he thinking? CD fair with superior production to compensate for a grating, nails on chalkboard voice...ugh. Marcus gave it a 5. Am I the only one who finds this album completely melody free?" I'm not suggesting that everybody in the world must worship at Patty's feet, but dreadful? Stoned? Grating? Melody-free??? The mind boggles... Larry I in LA Spending too much on ink?
