Seatle (July 18) and Portland (July 20) Well, I just returned home and I see no digests more recent than Thursday, so I am going to post the setlists and my reflections for Seattle and Portland. If this duplicates other postings, please accept my apologies, OK? Patty blows me away. I've seen her once already this year, but this current set list is quite different from the previous. It was an upbeat, hard-rockin' set overall, and I loved how torchy "Find Yourself Another Fool" is these days. And her song choices during the improvisational portion of her show were great fun. She seemed delighted to be playing these outdoor shows at the Seattle and Portland zoos. When it began to rain during her Seattle set, she said, "I know it is a bit uncomfortable for you out there, but it is so beautiful watching you all put on your rain gear -- it reminds me of a garden of flowers blooming." Set list is identical for both shows except for songs 8 and 9: 1. Find Yourself Another Fool. 2. Stay on the Ride 3. Trapeze 4. Useless Desires 5. Burgundy Shoes 6. Live Forever (Billy Joe Shaver cover) 7. Long Ride Home 8. Poor Man's House * (Seattle) 8. You Never Get What You Want ** (Portland) 9. Backwater Blues (Bessie Smith cover) * (Seattle) 9. Nobody's Crying ** (Portland) 10. Be Careful 11. When It Don't Come Easy 12. No Bad News 13. Love Throw a Line 14. Heavenly Day 15. Don't Ever Give Up 16. Truth #2 ENCORE: 17. Up to the Mountain (MLK song) 18. Rain 19. Getting Ready Opening act Scott Miller is a great songwriter (former member of the V-Roys and current member of Commonwealth). "I'm from East Tennessee," he said, "You can't spray for us." His irreverent sense of humor probably didn't sit too well with some audience members. "I love opening for Patty," he said during his Seattle show, "it is pleasant picturing you all in your underwear." But his songs were well-received and I'd never seen him performing solo, so this was a treat. Scott Miller's set in Seattle: 1. Mary 2. Daddy Raised A Boy 3. The Rain 4. Mess of This Town 5. Freedom's a Stranger 6. Lie I Belive 7. For Jack Tymon ("may your heart be so pure its one that God wants to know") 8. Ciderville Saturday Night 9. Is There Room on the Cross for Me Scott Miller's set in Portland: 1. Mary 2. Daddy Raised a Boy 3. I'll Go to My Grave Loving You 4. Mess of This Town 5. Freedom's a Stranger 6. For Jack Tymon 7. Bastard's Only Child 8. Loving That Girl Is Hard On a Man 9. I then looked at her friends and low and behold Patty Griffin is her #2 friend (of over 2200 friends) http://www.myspace.com/jacquimckenzie Mike ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V11 #167 **********************************
