Some have described it as a "musical," but since the main characters are musicians collaborating on songs it remains firmly grounded in the real world. Although I don't know how the songwriting process really works, the way it is depicted in "Once" rang true for me. My daughter and I each reported goosebump-inducing musical moments--but at different times! No recognizable stars, and probably the better for it. Some conversational f-bombs sprinkled here and there, but suitable for mature teens and anybody who enjoys "folk rock." Cheers, Larry I in LA Not making enough money? It's fantastic--beautiful and poignant, and the music is outstanding. Glen Hansard from longtime Irish band, The Frames gives a phenomenal performance--true and not overdone, and Marketa Irglova, who plays the young Czech woman is stellar. All the songs were written by Hansard and Irglova, and as a songwriter myself, the whole film is incredibly inspirational. It's a treat, truly, for Patty fans and music lovers everywhere. Go see it, go see it, go see it! peace, kara Lawrence Israelson wrote: If "Once" comes to your local theater or video store, I cannot recommend it highly enough. I should see if I can nail my friend Katie down and then she and I can share a cabin. Otherwise, I could always go with whatever current boyfriend I have at the time, if he's on board (literally). But since my friend Katie told me about it and we are both huge music fans and also singers and she told me about it it would make perfect sense to go together. But she is flighty, I haven't read any of the fine print and haven't looked into airfare from NYC, etc. I really need to print out and give a good read, but am a lazy arse! ;( Well, this would be the time to do that. And put in the vacation request now, far in advance. 'Twould be perfect. Anyhoodlebadoodles, Katie and I are swinging mid-thirties who often get mistaken for much younger. I think this would be a wonderfully fun thing to do, especially being an extreme music afficionado. I should really pick up my guitar again. (Gave a really nice one away in an extreme Lucinda Williams' "Drunken Angel" type way--well, not quite. But love to sing. Always. So....guess what I'm trying to do is motivate myself to print out, look at details, make some calls...decide if this is something I definitely want to do and then book it. Don't want to go by myself, and Katie may not be nail-down-able...but I spoze I could go by myself if necessary and I may pass the info along to other friends who might be totally into it. Well, that's that for now. Cheers, Amy ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. Why approach Patty Griffin at all? I know I wouldn't. Why not just everyone get together, and give PG space, and enjoy the shows with the other MMers? I'm just sayin. Just because someone you like plays somewhere, it's not a green light to swarm someone in any way possible. Make a pact. Now. No one talks to PG on the cruise, unless spoken to or it's like important like "oh my God, watch your step Patty! Don't fall over!". Wouldn't the experience of just being there in an intimate atmosphere be good enough not to overstep personal boundries? peace love and vegetable rights, Paul - -----original----- my issue is that Patty likes her space. How is she going to handle being approached by fans while at the pool, or the casino, or just walking around the ship?? I have to wonder what she was thinking... ~Kim *********************************** * * Well, there's gonna be sex, drugs, * rock n roll. Go see "In the Shadow of the Moon" when it comes out. Holy effing crap!!! It's a documentary of the NASA lunar missions and it opened the Sarasota Film Festival this year, and has been in several others. I laughed, I cried, it was effing awesome! It's expected to come out in theaters I believe in September. I'm buying several copies to give my parents and others for Xmas. Seriously, my little review gives it no justice at all. See this film. It was incredible! peace love and vegetable rights, paul *********************************** * * Well, there's gonna be sex, drugs, * rock n roll. If it's even remotely as good as the "From The Earth To The Moon" HBO/Tom Hanks-produced series from the late 1990s, this will be a can't-miss for me. Thanks for the heads-up! If you haven't seen "From The Earth To The Moon" and are a fan of that era of NASA, you HAVE to rent or buy it. It's phenomenal! Even folk I know that were not that into the program were astounded at how great of a series it was.
