First off-- John Prine fans arent the only ones to get 'overserved' on land or by sea, but that's a story for another day. The cheapest cabins are interior, or windowless, but none of them are below the waterline as previously reported. There are many arguments for which is better for avoiding sea sickness or 'feeling' the ship or whatnot, but slap one of those little motion sickness patches behind your ear and you will be fine. But keep in mind that you arent supposed to drink alcohol while taking motion sickness meds. Personally, I vote for cabins with windows, and the windows are 2.5x3.5 ft or so, at the smallest-- no portholes for paying cruisers. The $300 premium over the posted cruise price-- well, not quite sure of the exact numbers, but the basics are something like this. The posted cruise price is $500 (just making up numbers here), but the discounted broker price is $425, and I assure you that Sixthman worked out a great price, since they have the entire boat reserved.... Of that $300+ premium, about half of it goes to the performers, the rest covers expenses and advertising and such, and the remainder is all profit, and Im sure that there is plenty of profit calculated in (ummm... over 2000 cruisers). As for performers being on the boat-- I also assure you that the headliners (Lyle and Emmylou, and maybe even some of the others) will NOT be onboard for the entire trip. They will only be onboard for part of the trip, either starting the trip and departing in a port of call, or joining the ship in a port of call and returning. Performances-- there will be headliner shows, with reserved seating in the main theater. The way it wil probably work will be during the dinner timeframe-- there are 2 'seatings' for dinner, early and late. While you are eating dinner at the early seating, everyone from the late seating is in the main theater for their show. Then they go to the dining rooms and you go to the theater during the late seating. Or vice versa... So with what appears to be 2 full days at sea, lets just say that SeaDay #1 will be Lyle's headlining show, and SeaDay #2 will be Emmylou's. Again, I am just making things up, this isnt the actual schedule. What about the non-headliners, you ask? But of course! They will be playing in other, smaller theaters, cabarets, or nightclubs onboard... Festival style. So there might be say.. 3 other stages setup. And performers will be scheduled here and there, maybe on different nights or whatever. So you will be able to come and go as you like, but its all 'open', and you wont have assigned seats or anything... And 2, or worse yet-- 3! Of your favorite performers could be playing at the same time on different stages... Basically, its like a mini folk-tinged Bonnaroo, but on a boat. Boataroo? But take this into account- crusies are still generally regarded as a good value in the vacation world. If you were to stay at a Red Roof Inn for a week, and eat breakfast and lunch at Denny's and dinner at a fancy-schmancy dinner establishment, the Roof might be cheaper. But upgrade to the Hampton Inn, and the boat beats it over a weeklong stay. Sure, the boats rooms are smaller than a hotel room, and your cell phone wont work out at sea, but being on a cruise is a heckuvalotta fun. And this cruise will have some pretty good music too!!! And lots of alcohol... And a Casino.... And did I mention the alcohol? Love those boat drinks!!! Sixthman, the guys that are going this cruise, have made a name for themselves with the "Rock Boat"- a boatload of performers from the rock side o things headlined by Sister Hazel, and band-fronted cruises by John Mayer, Lynrd Skynrd and Bare Naked Ladies, tho I believe the band-fronted crusies were not full-ship bookings, and there were other, non-Sixthman type cruisers onboard, tho they would not have been admitted to the Sixthman events onboard. All in all, these types of cruises are generally a lot of fun, and you will be sharing the trip with a lot of other music loving people. And yes-- you will gain 10lbs!!! There is food EVERYWHERE!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2007 10:15:42 -0400 From: "Karen Hester" Subject: Re: MM: Blinkers Kia ora ex-lurker EM I find Patty's US focus a bit odd too - many Americana and folk artists who I assume sell much less in the US than she does (eg Jolie Holland, Be Good Tanyas, Over the Rhine) are much bigger in many other parts of the world than Patty is. I often had to order her stuff from the States when I was in New Zealand, they didn't bother to release it locally. It's a sensible choice though - concentrate on one part of the world, not bother with the hassle of playing lots of little gigs elsewhere and then returning a couple years later and everyone has forgotten so she'd have to build that fan-base yet again. Plus, she might be a bit more on the country side and that is more popular in the States than anywhere else. So I don't think it's "blinkers", more a financial decision, and maybe she likes to spend some time at home. Karen > From: "Matthew Smith" > Subject: MM: Blinkers > > We excuse me. And although not what I'd call the mainstream-style country of nowadays, I always thought the forebearers of that popular country sound, ie: Johnny Cash/George Jones/Hank Williams brand of country was immensley popular around the world. Patty's got some twang but I wouldn't describe her as 'country'. Also, there are so many fine musicians on this cruise, I don't think people will be "bothering" anyone. I think they will be enjoying, enjoying the traveling, the adventure, the wide range of music, etc. I don't think anyone would be stalking or bothering Patty. To be honest, while I love and respect Patty's musicB from a distance, I was more intrigued by the opportunity to go on a cruise (which is not something I generally do) with lots of music lovers andB musicians who I appreciate (Shawn Colvin, Emmylou, etc. not to mention some very talented boys) with a friend of mine and have an amazing time. This isn't even about Patty for me, other than that my friend found out about this through a Patty link of some sort. To me it's the whole idea of having a wonderful time with fellow music lovers and musicians and enjoyers of life. And since i do have some vacation time coming to me at my job and haven't taken one in awhile, I think this is a perfectly fun thing to do...and can start saving now. Especially if my good friend is planning to go to. But then, we'll see...with a new romance blooming and who knows what's going, sometimes it's hard to plan that far in advance. But I think it definitely sounds amazing! Like these great music festivals I go to like Falcon Ridge and Clearwater, but on a cruise. Taking it to the next level. Not about any one musician, but about love for music, travel, adventure...that's where I'm coming from. Cheers, will know more later if I am going or if it's just a nice though...as my plans evolve. But who knows? Maybe will catch some of you out there if I decide to jump on this one. Murph's observation about the premium being paid to experience these concerts is valid and noteworthy. I think I'm in the camp that feels the premium is worth it considering that virtually all of these performers are among my favorites and I can see them in what I hope would be a very comfortable and relaxed setting. Cash and Hank Williams have some cred in folk circles and among ironic hipsters overseas, but I'm not sure if they're "immensely popular" around the world. Not in Australasia and Europe as far as I've noticed. American jazz, r'n'b and hip hop have had much more of an international impact. Even with that limited overseas market, Patty or her management seem to be underselling her.
