I had posted a set list and some brief comments late that night, but I left out a few things that I had intended to mention within a few days of that original post. After all this time, I will have to admit the Patty remarks reproduced here must be described as approximately what she said, rather than exact quotations... Before "Trapeze": "We came from Boise and I like this air. It makes me feel funny. I get a little strange." Before "Burgundy Shoes," the usual about how a fellow songwriter challenged her to write a "happy" song: "I felt bad about that. Here's a tip, though: a song about springtime and shoes" (can't help but be happy) Before "First Star": "I'm taking a poll. How many of you out there wish on the first star you see at night? I do, but there are not a lot of us." After "First Star," addressing the fans in the balcony section: "I used to sit up there and I got very sensitive because nobody ever looked up there. I know you're there." During the opening chords of "Be Careful," after somebody yelled out, "You're so smart": "Don't say that too soon." As if on cue, somebody in the audience asked Patty about her dog as she was getting ready to play "Heavenly Day." During "Up To The Mountain," I detected the slightest hesitation by Patty on the "I'll be working" line, almost as if she were struggling to remember the lyric. What was really odd about it was that I had this visceral sensation of panic, as if I were a parent watching my child in her first school play and worrying that she would freeze up on stage. Totally involuntary and very strange... Finally, during the last encore, Patty nailed my favorite line from "Getting Ready" with a wonderful expression on her face: "Oh, baby, you were my drug/And I was just your cigarette." After the show, I wheedled a very nice publicity poster from somebody on the theater's staff and Patty was gracious enough to autograph it for me. While waiting for her to exit from backstage, I had a nice conversation with David Klein and his lady friend (after all this time I can't remember her name or if they're married, etc.--sorry!). David is a huge Springsteen fan who has seen him in concert more than 50 times, and it got me to thinking about Patty's love of The Boss and his music. She's done at least three of his songs that I know of, and all mention driving, at least peripherally ("Stolen Car," "Racing In The Street," "Mansion On The Hill"), so I'd like to nominate "Wreck On The Highway" for her next Springsteen cover. Last thing: this show marked the second time I had seen Terremoto (featuring Patty's current drummer, Michael Longoria) opening for her, and I found them much more engaging this time, so I sprung for their CD "Shadows From The Jungle." Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that any of the songs they performed at The Wiltern in L.A. or in Boulder are on the CD! (Maybe an instrumental or two, but nothing on the CD sounded at all familiar.) For Patty completists, however, she does provide some very limited vocal support on two Terremoto tracks. It sounds like she sang just a few lines, which are then repeated (sampled?) within the two songs, "Novo Moto" and "Money Won't." OK, all done now. Cheers, Larry I in LA Protect your family.
