The array of opinions, insights, ideas, anecdotes and thoughts gave me a whole new perspective on my own ideas about Patty and the people who love her work. It all seems like I struck a nerve since there were so many posts on this subject, including comments from lurkers (a new concept for me). Couple of clarifications: Though I mentioned comments on the fan site (this list), I was really commenting more on media comments. Even still, its good to know that all performing artists (and their clothes, their crowds, their fans) are subject to discussions of fashion, etc - something I was probably overlooking. Obviously, thats not all that they pay attention to but its definitely a big part. I was in no way trying to attack any Patty fans. Now I realize (even more so) how much affection all of you have for her and how an interest in her clothes, affect, performance style, etc. is all part of WHY you love her. As a new fan, I was not aware of her previous apparent "lack of comfort" on stage and her new robust energy for performing so this new aspect of her artistry has a different meaning for me now. Though I live near Boston, Im not a Bostonian. Im certainly not reserved :) Since you have all seen the posts, I wont try to respond to each here. I may respond directly to a few folks to continue the conversation when I have some more time. Does >anyone really note (in a major national newspaper) how good JT or >Dylan or others LOOKED??? Last summer when Jewel was touring with Rob Thomas, I decided to join the Atlantic Records forum for Rob to see what the Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 fans thought of the fact these two were touring and what they thought of Jewel after seeing a show. " You ask "I have wondered to myself if they say similar things on fan sites for male singer/songwriters". Trust me, at least on that forum, it's MUCH "worse" ("worse" vs "better" depending on your stance). They commented on his t-shirts, his beard growth or lack thereof, his boots, his shoes, his jeans, his hair, his booty, his arms, his eyes, his....well, you get the picture. Of course, those were the FANS. I do not recall too many reviews from newspapers et al that mentioned Rob's attire and of course they did mention Jewel's from time to time. Just wanted to point out that on at least some fan sites the fashion and attitude talk is there too. Kind of like the artistic justification of hearing your fav artist cover another fav artist with their own unique and endearing spin on it. High praise considering that I am used to Patty's version. Patty's been skirting the edges of the big time for awhile now. Just a matter of time.
