Hi Eric,
 
I think you bring up interesting comments that are not off base at all. Women have been struggling with such things in the music business and the world for ages.
 
But at the same time, I think there is nothing wrong with commenting on how marvelous Patty looked. I don't think any of us are on this list because of her looks (I know I'm not, but because of her talent, soulfulness, incredible songwriting, etc.)
 
However, I do think that Patty herself clearly enjoys fashion. The woman next to me pointed out her platform shoes saying that despite possible clumsiness Patty seened to enjoy style.

I did groan a bit when some guy at the start of the show commented on her "black, slinky dress" or something to that effect. But I also laughed too in a good-humored way. I mean, clearly she also dressed for the part of performer and seemed to enjoy that--nothing wrong with that.
 
As far as Joni Mitchell, it hurts me to think that she might never have gotten regognized for her incredible talent if she hadn't also been lovely. She too fought agism, sexism, all of it. Being attractive is not always a blessing.
 
But my impression of the folks on this list is that if they mention looks, it's because Patty herself seems to take an interest in fashion and looking good in a normal way that would go with being a performer, that she seems to have good and classy tastes and a sense of fun, and there's nothing wrong with commenting on it. I liked the whole aesthetic stage effect of the changing colors, her silouette at the piano, the red air accentuated by the light--it was all part of the sensory experience of a great concert. True, the sound and lyric and emotion went straight to my heart and soul, but there is nothing wrong with being attractive and enjoying, even working to maintain and celebrate or noticing it.
 
Men too take pride in their looks and many male performers certainly work to maintain their looks, enjoy dressing up and showing off their stuff. Some don't as much. Whatever people wnat to do. True, men don't deal with the same sexism and looksism women face.
 
 
But I really feel that people on this list wouldn't be here unless it was about the music. And when Patty herself clearly enjoys dressing up and looking good, why not comment on that too if done in an appropriate way. I would think it pretty sad if someone was on the list just because they thought Patty had on cool shoes, and not because they were moved by the music. But when Patty herself writes songs about shoes "Burgundy Shoes" lol although I'm sure it's about a lot more than shoes, hey, there's nothing wrong with saying she's a striking woman...as a woman myself, I'm glad to see someone like her so talented, aging gracefully and beautiful and radiating so much more than just being "another ass stuffed in jeans' or whatever that song is about. these are issues women deal with, but hey, I don't take her to task for being thin, although I prefer the aesthetic of a slightly more voluptous woman myself, there are all kinds of beauties to appreciate. Guys like John Mayer take care of their appearance too and can be sexy as hell, women performers should shake their stuff too if they want to. Patty's a graceful artist and musician and clearly has a good sense of style and enjoys that ... more power to her, and I doubt she'd be offended by someone thinking she looked good. I seriously doubt anyone here is here b/c of looks and not the power of the music, voice and songs themselves

Subject: MM: Looks

I've never been one to appreciate "dressing up".  I find that good, 
sturdy, serviceable clothing is best in
most arenas, including stage. When I see a performer, say a woman, in 
some complicated looking
dress with fancy shoes, I have to wonder, why?  I saw Joss Stone on some 
TV show recently, and
she had on a short dress and she was barefoot.  Just about as sexy as 
you can be.  I haven't seen Patty
in years, but have seen pictures and I wonder about the dress up. To me, 
she doesn't need it because as
soon as she opens her mouth and that sound comes out, who gives a rip 
about what she's wearing?  I would
just think that if she were in jeans and a T-Shirt, and Converse, she'd 
be more comfortable. Perhaps more "loose".

Funny Eric mentions David Wilcox.  I'm assuming he meant the American 
Wilcox and not the Canadian Wilcox.
Correct me if I'm wrong.  I just saw David Wilcox last Saturday night.  
Sunday I went to see Leo Kottke, and
next Friday, it's Ellis Paul.  Makes me wonder.  David had on tennis 
shoes, white pants, and a black T-Shirt.
Leo had on Khakis and a white button up shirt and tennis shoes. As a 
matter of fact, I don't remember a male
performer getting dressed up. Ever. (Ok, ones that I have seen. Ok, 
Ellis Paul usually wheres a sport coat, and Lyle Lovett
always is "sharp".)

But most of the people I see, dress like me. I think the fancy dressing 
is a distraction to the "product".  

Be comfortable. Don't worry.

Besides....since when do clothes really make the person?
