The lovely Warner Theater was a great setting. Scott Miller was the opening act, who was good, but not what I came for. Patty was great from the moment she stepped onto the stage. I really appreciate how she disdains the almost obligatory "play 3 songs before addressing the audience" rule that so many performers follow. Like the traditional wedding charms, the old songs, new songs, borrowed songs, and blue songs all blended well. The hair was a bouncy pony-tail, and she wore a black tank top with a vaguely ballerina-like skirt which was hard to define colorwise with the lights but looked like maybe yellow tulle over blue satin, with the obligatory black hose (possibly fishnets) and big red heels. The band was totally with her all the way. I'll check for a write up in today's Washington Post, as well as tomorrow's. The theater was very near full, if not totally. Show The D.C. show was awesome last night! My husband and I got tickets from a new friend off this list so HUGE thanks to Melinda for the great tickets. Seats were fabulous, the Warner Theater in DC is so beautiful and Patty was amazing as usual. I can say that for the first time she played ALL of my favorites at this show. I am not great at remembering complete song sets, but I can tell you that she started solo on the piano with a beautiful french hymn her grandmother used to sing. Then she and the band launched into an amazing set including: Stay on the Ride Useless Desires Mary Kite When it don't come easy No Bad News Heavenly Day Up to the Mountain Nobody's Cryin - my all time favorite, first time hearing her sing it live Rain Swing Me - very exciting to hear her do this one!!! Never Give Up And More - I cant remember them all but there were more! It was an awesome show. Patty Rules. She wore a deep green net skirt (layers of net, like a tutu) over dark green hose and red slingback shoes with a black tank and black sash belt over the skirt. Very cute! As usual again, her voice was in fine form. My only unhappiness was the sound. I was in the third row and when Patty was alone with her guitar, it sounded wonderful. When the band played it sounded pretty bad. I know from seeing her at the Birchmere that the mix won't sound good unless you sit behind the mixing board but I kind of figured the Warner would have better sound. They didn't. It often sounded like the guitarist was playing another song entirely and we were hearing his monitor all night. Of course, since we could hear Patty perfectly, this wasn't horribily distracting. But, for the money, the sound could have been mixed much better. Maybe it was just my seats and everybody behind me had a better experience. Did anyone else notice this? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 10:27:12 EDT From: TimSharp63@aol.com Subject: MM: Patty on Ellen Patty was flawless on Ellen. Her voice was knock-you-off-your-feet, punch-you-in-the-face FANTASTIC. Patty in a green thule skirt, red peep-toe sling backs, and her firey red hair in a neat pony tail that ended up all over the place after rocking out a bit.... The highlight for me was the middle of the show when she said "this is the part of the show where I basically do whatever I want..." And then went on to play Mary, You never get what you want (!!), Not Alone (!!) and Nobody's Cryin' (wow). Rain was also pretty incredible... as was the final encore, Truth #2. And then there was Burgundy Shoes and Trapeze - also tremendously beautiful. ahhhh.... cloud 9... it's nice here... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 11:16:49 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Patty in Pittsburgh Nothing like a Patty concert in the spring , especially when winter is hanging on & a lift is appreciated. Got 2nd row seats , accompanied by ladyfriend , both daughters , famous road warrior Dave, his sister & her hubby.Patty appeared as the woman in black. Well, some charcoal , with knee high cowgirl boots. Set List: J'irai La Voir Un Jour - solo/piano First Star - solo/piano Get Yourself Another Fool Stay on the Ride Trapeze Useless Desires Burgundy Shoes - piano Kite Song - piano As Cold as it Gets - solo Mary - solo Be Careful - Patty & Doug When it Don't Come Easy No Bad News Love Throw a Line Heavenly Day I Don't Ever Give Up Up to the Mountain - Patty vocals/Doug guitar Truth #2 Encore Sweet Lorraine - solo Rain Getting Ready Delighted that Patty did so much solo , & so much piano. "J'irai" is one of my fav piano songs. Didn't get a good handle on " First Star " for the 1st time hearing it.Very loose & confident on the bluesy Sam Cooke "Fool" song. As expected , I liked "Trapeze" better w/o Emmylou's competing vocals."Burgundy Shoes" still grows on me. "Kite" is one of my favs , but the piano part seemed to have changed slightly, leaving me wanting. "Cold as it Gets" was the easy highlight of the show. Just Patty's great voice & a quiet guitar had me mesmerized. Dave apparently agreed with a big thumbs up at the finish. Patty honored us by injecting Pittsburgh into the 1st line of "Be Careful" in place of Paris. NBN was the usual crowd pleaser of the set.Other favs were MLK & HD. Come back anytime Patty : ) After the peak , the valley. My youngest was in an extraordinarily good mood , having finished a big paper , celebrated her b'day the day before , & out for spring break. Unfortunately , her car was stolen from a garage while at the concert. Car is recovered now , but she lost wallet & laptop , & we didn't get home till after 2 , which is why review is 2 days late. You oughta come some time for tea Maybe we could see the sea Talk a lot , or let things be Just enjoy the mystery Patty Griffin " 10 million miles " Don ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2007 12:10:24 -0400 From: Subject: RE: MM: Patty on Ellen Funny that you say that, Tim--cuz Stay on the Ride is one of my faves! To those of you who have e-mailed me privately over the past few weeks, my apologies for not getting back to you yet. I sincerely hope to catch up on my correspondence by the weekend. Regarding Stay On The Ride, I'm definitely on the side of the detractors. It's certainly not terrible, but I consider it just second-rate Patty. It's a little better in concert, however, because it's fun to watch Patty's facial expressions when she does the "voices" in the song ("that's OK, I'll stand," "you don't know where this bus is going to?", etc.). My biggest problem with the song, though, is its prominence on both the album and the tour. It's usually the first full-band PG original in the set. I guess Patty herself must really like it. Frankly, I've been disappointed with the sequencing of Patty's last two releases. Nothing could keep us MMers from buying a Patty CD and listening all the way to the end, but an artist can easily lose the unitiated if there isn't a "grabber" right off the bat. I'm OK with You'll Remember as CRT's kickoff because it's short and also showcases Patty's voice, but the next song should have been Trapeze or Heavenly Day. And what the hell is Getting Ready doing wedged between Trapeze and Burgundy Shoes? The spell created by the "hallelujah" climax of Trapeze is abruptly broken by the crunch of Getting Ready's intro. I had similar quibbles with ID as well, wondering why Useless Desires wasn't track one or two and also why Standing wasn't moved to a later slot (or omitted entirely, for that matter). Wow, where did that come from? Looks like I need a vacation. The songs, the sequencing, everything, is exactly what it should have been. I LOVE the whole record, but if anything after No Bad News it fizzles slightly for me. Could have used one more rocker toward the end, I think. Maybe if she had stuck Riding With The Amazons in there somewhere. I love the transition to Getting Ready from Trapeze, and the transition to Trapeze from Stay on the Ride. Just perfect.
