And while her presence is always welcome -- she has one of the best voices of any contemporary musician -- her performance Monday at the Byham Theater, Downtown, has an extra appeal. Earlier this year, Griffin released "Children Running Through," her first album of new material in three years; it's one of the best albums of 2007 and will add more juice to her already strong catalog of songs. PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE Patty Griffin bringing a little of everything Friday, April 13, 2007 By Scott Mervis, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette It's become expected that Patty Griffin records will be beautifully written and exquisitely sung, but it's been a while since the little redhead with the powerful pipes has turned up the volume. With her fifth and latest release, "Children Running Through," Griffin breaks out of the melancholy folk mood with a stylistically varied record that includes a handful of rockers that hark back to her more upbeat second album, "Flaming Red," in 1998. "I think I just needed to get really loud again, at least a little bit," Griffin notes in a brief e-mail exchange just before her guest spot on Jay Leno this week. Griffin, who performs at the Byham Monday, noted recently that when she recorded her first album 13 years ago, a producer told her that her voice sounded better when she sang quietly. Bad advice it was, but it made a big impression and colored her work for many years. On "Children Running Through," she lets that voice soar on a few bigger ballads, gospel-tinged tunes and some steamy rockers. She didn't set out, though, to write faster, grittier songs like "Getting Ready" and "No Bad News." "No, I don't ever do that," she says. "They just vary themselves all on their own. The trick actually is lining them up so they all fit together." After that second album, Griffin lost her contract with A&M, which left a third album unreleased. She had a lot of material built up by the time she was rediscovered by Dave Matthews and started recording for his ATO label in 2002. By the time "Children Running Through" came around, she was out of songs and forced to generate a new record from scratch. "[The songs] did come pretty readily," she notes. "It was scary at first. But luckily I had the time to do it and I ended up really loving that time." The 42-year-old singer -- who was born in Maine, broke out of Boston and now lives in Austin -- has been here a number of times either alone or with a lone guitarist. This time, she notes, "Five pieces. We play around with arrangements. A little of everything." Her radio play in Pittsburgh and many visits here have made this a hospitable town for Griffin. "I do love playing in Pittsburgh," she says. "The audiences are enthusiastic. There's a great public radio station, WYEP, absolutely great. They have obviously introduced me to a lot of people in Pittsburgh. I'm grateful for that. It's a great town to get to come to. A very lucky thing for me." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2007 00:38:32 -0400 From: "rockerpgh _" Subject: MM: NY Times blurbs on the musical and this week's concert 10 MILLION MILES -- Patty Griffin, a folksy singer who has written for everyone from Linda Ronstadt to the Dixie Chicks, has worked in country, rock and even gospel. Her versatility should come in handy in this new musical road trip about a couple traveling across the country in a beat-up Chevy. Keith Bunin (''The Credeaux Canvas'') wrote the book, and Michael Mayer (''Spring Awakening'') directs. Previews of the Atlantic Theater Company show begin May 9. Opens in June. Atlantic Theater, 336 West 20th Street, Chelsea. Telecharge. atlantictheater.com. PATTY GRIFFIN (Thursday) Patty Griffin may be best known as the songwriter of the Dixie Chicks' "Let Him Fly" and "Truth No. 2." But on her own she is more cathartic, with songs that plunge into love as mysticism, desire and faith. Her songs may twang, but they can also cut deep. With Terremoto. At 8 p.m., Beacon Theater, 2124 Broadway, at 74th Street, (212) 307-7171, beacontheatrenyc.com; $29 and $39.
