It was time #10 seeing Patty for me, & I think she gets better every year. Just plain brings it. I keep wondering when the well will run dry, & I'm glad every time that it hasn't yet. A little personal note -- I first started going to shows in 2002, which was the year of 1000 Kisses. It was also the year that my mother died of cancer. That disc got me through that summer, with songs that seemed like they were written for my situation. Now it's 2007 -- we have CRT... and my father died 2 weeks ago today. Again Patty pulls me through with songs that seem like they were written to do just that. I don't know how she does it, but she gets in my head. Thankfully. Personally, this one's not half bad. Recognizing my inescapable Patty bias, and weighting each artist about two-thirds for body of work and one-third for influence on other performers, my Top 10 would be: 1. Aretha 2. Carole King 3. Joni 4. Janis 5. Billie Holiday 6. Patsy Cline 7. Emmylou 8 (with a bullet). Patty 9. Patti Smith 10. Chrissie Hynde My only real quibbles with WYEP's Top 20 are Bonnie Raitt (solid but I believe thoroughly outclassed by everybody else among the first nine), Madonna (and this is not a reflexive, anti-pop reaction because I honestly like Express Yourself, Material Girl, Ray Of Light, Don't Tell Me and half a dozen others) and Annie Lennox (although that woman can SING).
