Another tremendous night of music. Patty played 19 songs Thursday night, which was two more than she played at the Wiltern on the 13th. She didn't play Icicles or Sweet Lorraine this time, so that means I got to hear four "new" ones this time. I believe three of those four have been popping up lately, but the other was a complete surprise and even Patty said "we haven't played that song in a long time." Patty's outfit: fairly low-cut black dress, wide black belt, sheer black stockings, red pumps Supporting players: Doug Lancio--guitars, backing vocals, percussion on NBN Bryn Davies--upright bass, cello, harmony & backing vocals, piano on the "surprise" song Frank Swart--electric bass Michael Longoria--percussion, backing vocals Main Set: Get Yourself Another Fool Stay On The Ride Trapeze Useless Desires Burgundy Shoes First Star Mary You Never Get What You Want Be Careful When It Don't Come Easy No Bad News Love Throw A Line Heavenly Day I Don't Ever Give Up Up To The Mountain (MLK Song) One Big Love (!) I hadn't complained to them because I also bought the actual CD from B&N, but I am happy to get a better file for The Moon Song. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2007 11:38:27 -0400 From: "John Maynard" Subject: MM: Tickets for Toronto Show on April 24th On Sale today I didn't see a posting on this. Tickets went on sale at ticketmaster today for Patty's show on April 24th at the St Paul Trinity Church. This should be an amazing venue for her. As she stood ready to sing her first song she looked like an impossibly beautiful human flower. Her gestation complete, Patty has joined the ranks of major American singer/songwriters and she longer doubts her place on the stage. As she told her audience, she loves her job. But it was not always so, at least from the audience's perspective. Perhaps one of the most notable things about Patty's latest swing through Northern California is how far she has come in terms of outward confidence and audience acceptance. Patty's first appearance in San Francisco - almost ten years ago at the Great American Music Hall as the opening act for Jan Arden - premiered an awkward performer with talent oozing from her essence. It is unlikely if there were even ten people in that entire audience who had come to watch her. But despite her discomfort and obscurity, she sang her way into the hearts of her audience then and wherever else she sang. So, it was entirely fitting to her spirit and tenacity that on her birthday, Patty arrived at one of the most storied rock venues in the country unbowed, exuberant, and unapologetic. From less than ten people to over 2000 screaming, adoring fans. Patty Griffin is a national treasure, an example of what happens when a person follows her imagination against all odds. The show at the Warfield started slow and moody with a Sam Cooke song and the unremarkable "Stay on the Ride." Anyone who has seen Patty perform knows that she follows her own rhythm and does very little gratuitously. She quickly hit her stride with the next song "Trapeze" - a simple little painting that draws to its beautiful plaintive conclusion, Patty's version of the halleluiah chorus. By the time she sat down to the piano to play "Burgundy Shoes," Patty was in control and radiant. I know Patty says that "Burgundy Shoes" was her response to the challenge that she write a happy song, but the depth of feeling that pours through her and out to her audience when she sings "sun, sun, sun, sun" carries with it a range of joy and intensity that can pierce the heart. Her radiance during this moment not only shines and nourishes her soul but also those hearing her sing. The moment is so startlingly evocative that I always smile a little when I think that her happiness can spill over so easily to other broad emotions. It was Patty's birthday, which she had started to celebrate in earnest in Santa Cruz the night before, and though comfortable now with the crowds and adoration, she's also still humble and frail. It is what draws us in, her honesty and vulnerability. And when she sang "Be Careful," she reminds all of us, especially women, that daily we walk a high wire act over a steep chasm of human fragility. This vulnerable Patty remains accessible despite her success. Almost paradoxically she draws strength and her signature fierceness from this vulnerability. It gives her the edge that makes her stand out and be noteworthy. After "Be Careful," Patty wound her way through her extraordinary "When it Don't Come Easy," and then brought the house down with "No Bad News," an equally extraordinary song. "No Bad News" shows us the proud, wise Patty, the Patty who knows how to strut but holds onto the truth, urging the audience to "grow kindness in our hearts, for all the strangers among us/Till there are no strangers anymore." When she strummed her last chord, the audience simply erupted, to which she playfully replied: "Now you're all wound up." And, she could have added, though she would never have, in awe. The rest of show was joyous, with the audience showering Patty the affection she so richly deserves. She's paid dues for all of us, and when she donned her pointy birthday hat, dancing around the stage, willing to play her heart out on the concluding song "Getting Ready," it was apparent to all who had come that we were being treated to that rarest of things: an artist in full bloom.
