Lots of expression in her face and body and that leg was kicking out and to the side on many songs. Patty really made me feel like she felt singing and performing was fresh and new. The Aladdin can have very finicky acoustics but Roy Taylor had the rooms sound well under control and Pattys voice was as strong and clear as Ive ever heard. The crowd was incredibly enthusiastic but also very respectful. People werent yelling we love you and such during every song. And, amazingly, I didnt hear one shouted out request. We all just gratefully took in what Patty had to give and it was all we could ask for. For those who like to note these sorts of things, she was wearing a very simple black dress with white specks and an eight inch wide black leather overlapping belt drawn tight, black high heals and I thought bare legs but during the encore I think saw very understated fishnets One minor annoyance. The Aladdin is general admission. We were like the 5th people in line, but when we got to the front of the theater, a couple of people ahead of us had draped coats and such over the first two rows. They were saving like 40 seats! It turns out that some realtor had bought his whole organization tickets so the first two rows were filled with 40 and 50 somethings that most probably were totally unfamiliar with Pattys music. Im sure that Patty could probably only see the first three or four rows from the stage and I have to wonder what she might have been thinking seeing all these people who were respectful but totally not into the music like most front rows are typically filled with Speaking of 50 somethings, Im very bad with set lists, but here is what I remember (absolutely not in perfect order) The French song Find Yourself Another Fool Stay On the Ride Trapeze Burgundy Shoes Kite Useless Desires Heavenly Day Icicles Falling Be Careful Up To the Mountains I Dont Ever Give Up No Bad News Love Throws a Line Dont Come Easy Long Ride Home Sweet Lorraine Top of the World Roy P.S. What an amazing show last night was! This too was my sixth time seeing Patty... I feel privilege to have been a witness! The Alladin is such a small venue! That is both a blessing and a curse... My Husband and I got in line 2 hours before doors. We've never done that . I was able to sit front row, directly under Her mic... We were not part of that over inflated party! It was annoying.. I understand saving a seat here and there, but that was abuse. There are Patty fans who hold their breath all year, and those seats should not be taken in mass by people who feel "work obligation" to be there! Thank God they were not chatty during the show... I didn't have to turn around and Kung Foo them! By the way...... Sweet Lorraine, #1 encore, OMG! I thought my heart was gonna explode! Patty was relaxed, perhaps, but full of energy when she performed at the Aladdin Theater in Portland Oregon last night. It was a wonderful performance. Here's the setlist, along with some of her comments (to the best of my memory and partially-illegible notes I scrawled in the dark). 1. J'irai La Voir Un Jour (solo piano) 2. Get Yourself Another Fool 3. Stay on the Ride 4. Trapeze 5. Useless Desires 6. Burgundy Shoes ("This was my first attempt at a happy song. Of course, it involves shoes!") 7. Kite 8. Be Careful (she started, forgot the lyrics, and restarted the song. "That's the first time this has happened for at least a week!") 9. When It Don't Come Easy 10. No Bad News 11. Love Throw a Line 12. Heavenly Day ("I don't write too many love songs -- there are so many great ones to pick and choose from. But I wrote this on a lovely sunny Sunday, and I wrote it to my little dog.") 13. I Don't Ever Give Up 14. Up to the Mountain (MLK song) 15. Icicles ("If you lived in the other Portland -- Portland Maine -- you'd know how lovely and inspirational an ice storm can be." After some discussion with audience members: "Oh -- you do have ice storms out here? I should have know that -- I'm sorry!") Encore: 16. Sweet Lorraine (solo) 17. Long Ride Home 18. Top of the World ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2007 22:27:36 -0700 From: "Lawrence Israelson" Subject: MM: belated Wiltern report Greetings from Denver. In the week since my daughter and I saw Patty at The Wiltern on the 13th, real life has intruded in a big way. With tax returns, preparations for this business trip and, unfortunately, the funeral of an elderly relative now in the rear-view mirror, I can take a breath and do something a lot more fun. As usual, I'll focus on the show first and then throw in some stuff about events surrounding the show for those whose eyes haven't yet glazed over... Echoing what so many others have already posted, there's just *something* about Patty on this tour. If I had to guess, I'd say that she is somehow beyond the insecurity that occasionally (and in some cases almost constantly) afflicts the artist who bares her soul to the world. Where she may have once fretted about the audience "getting" what she was trying to tell them, she now appears comfortable and confident that she will make that connection. This realization makes some performers arrogant, but in Patty's case it seems to have infused her with a palpable joy as she recognizes that she can share her beautiful music with a world that appreciates it. After an interesting, primarily instrumental set by Terremoto (the duo of upright bassist Luis Guerra and Patty's own percussionist, Michael Longoria), our Ms. Griffin took the stage in a dark brown (I think) V-neck dress, wide belt, lacy teal stockings and a pair of satin-finish pink high heels with silver accents (maybe rhinestones?). She was joined onstage by her Hotel Cafe backing trio of Longoria, Doug Lancio, and bassist/cellist Bryn Davies, along with electric bassist Frank Swart, a ball of energy with an impressive beard who, if he'd had any more fun, probably would have gotten himself arrested. Patty opened with what she calls her "Sam Cooke song," the Frank Haywood/Ernest Tucker composition Get Yourself Another Fool. Flashing a huge grin, she had us mesmerized from the first note, at one point giving an ever-so-brief glimpse of Cooke himself with the way she stretched out "luh-ooh-ove" while singing the line "Your kind of love a heart couldn't stand." Patty then grabbed a guitar (and again, other than the difference between acoustic and electric, I know diddly about guitars) for Stay On The Ride, Trapeze and Useless Desires. As it was at The Hotel Cafe, Trapeze was absolutely transcendent with Bryn ably filling in for Emmylou Harris on harmony vocals. The last time I saw Patty attempt Useless Desires, she gave up after two false starts, but this rendition went off without a noticeable hitch and the crowd was extremely appreciative. In fact, Patty seemed touched by the reception throughout the show, and wondered aloud why she hadn't played L.A. for such a long time. (Amen!) From there, Patty moved to the piano for Burgundy Shoes and the new First Star, and then it was back to guitar for Be Careful, When It Don't Come Easy and the crowd-pleasing No Bad News. Next was an extended version of Love Throw A Line, followed by Heavenly Day, I Don't Ever Give Up, Up To The Mountain (vocal only) and Icicles. Around this time, somebody right up front held out a bouquet, but since Patty was holding a guitar she nodded to the space in front of the microphone. We figured this was a good opportunity to slide our early birthday card Patty's way as well. (I hope she didn't give us credit for the flowers, though, as that was somebody else.) My wife was worried that my daughter and I were slipping into stalker territory, but the inscription was very respectful: "Enjoy your day--you deserve it! You and your music make the world a better place. Thanks, The Israelsons of Glendale, CA." The most interesting token of appreciation, however, came right before the encore when somebody "slingshot" a pair of boxer shorts right between Doug and Patty. When composure was regained, we were treated to a three-song encore of Sweet Lorraine, Let Him Fly and a raucous Getting Ready. Patty gave us a priceless expression during Let Him Fly when you could tell that she almost delivered the wrong line before catching herself in the nick of time. Seventeen songs just flew by... Well, I've been up since 4 a.m. Pacific and I'm running out of steam, so a quick shout-out to Bruce Greenberg (thanks again for recording the XM "Loft Session"), his fiancee Maria and daughter Jessie (sp?), plus Holly Karas and...damn, can't remember his name!...and the couple who reminisced with me about the San Luis Obispo "guitar pull" where Patty blew away (through no fault of their own--Patty's just that good) Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin and Dar Williams. Although I enjoy spreading the word about Patty to the uninitiated, it's always great to hang out with people who already know. I also had an interesting PG-related exchange with a columnist for The Nation, but that will have to wait for a separate e-mail. Until then, it's less than three days until Patty plays The Boulder Theater. Funny how I just *happened* to have business in Denver this week... ;-) Cheers, Larry I in LA Click for free info on detox treatments for drug & alcohol dependency
