It was an awesome show!!! Easily the best Patty show I've seen and I have seen 7! First, specs on the venue--Catalyst is a small club that holds less than 1000 people, it's very nice and intimate, and it was packed. My gf and I got there by 6pm and there was already a line more than a block long waiting to get in. Patty's drummer, Michael Langoria, opened the show. His band is really good and worth getting there to see. Plus, he is super nice, even said hi to me when he was walking by. As for Patty, she was nothing short of amazing!! She looked gorgeous in a scoop neck sleeveless top, cargo shorts, black stockings, cowboy boots and the famous flaming red hair down! Her voice was pitch perfect as always. And, her guitar and piano work as extraordinary! As a performer Patty has always been great, but she seems to have really blossomed on this tour! I had never seen her so confident and so willing to chat with the audience--it was great! Set list went like this: Get Yourself Another Fool Stay On The Ride (Chat) Trapeze Useless Desires (Chat) Burgundy Shoes Kite Song (Chat) Be Careful (chat) When It Don't Come Easy No Bad News (Chat) Love Throw A Line (CHat about how she wrote it for her dog) Heavenly Day I Don't Ever Give Up (Chat) Up To The Mountain(Just Patty and Doug!) (Chat) Icicles Encore:* Let Him Fly Long Ride Home Getting Ready According to the set-list, other possible choices during the encore included 'Rain', 'TOTW', and 'Tony', so look for them at future shows. The coolest moment was when at about a quarter to 10, she announced "I was born on the east coast, and it's probably past midnight over there, so it's my birthday right now!" The crowd went wild and made a very cute attempt at singing the birthday song at the same time (and failing). It was the perfect peak to a great show. Patty seemed really touched and to love Santa Cruz as much as Santa Cruz loved her because she kept saying what a great place it was to play. She also let us know that she now has gone from birthday to week to month, which was really cute! The whole show was quite magical, and I can's wait to see Patty again. She is awesome and gets better every time I see her, so I cannot wait to see her again! For those of you who haven't seen Patty yet, you are in for a major treat! From the VAF (VVAF) , the ANSWER Coalition, F.I.D.O., the Pedigree Adoption Center, to the Keeta Fund, to the United Way, to a hospice for men at St Charles and all the others. This years Patty Griffin Birthday Fund Drive collected $3,630 for these organizations. In the 5 years we have had a Birthday Drive, we have collected a total of $25,496.47. Again, thank you to everyone! Happy Birthday Patty. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2007 07:21:30 -0700 From: "Tricia Breen" Subject: MM: Patty in SF Don't have much time to report about the show, but wanted to say that this was the most moving performance of Mary that I have seen her do. The show was great. We all sang Happy Birthday to her. They brought a cake out at the end and she blew out the candles. And she put on a birthday hat to sing Tony. Very different crowd than I have seen at her shows before. I guess she is truly getting more mainstream fans. Tricia ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2007 10:53:57 -0700 From: Kathryn Ogaz Subject: MM: SF-Warfield concert Holy BirthdayParty Batman! Last night's concert (on Patty's birthday no less) at the Warfield was completely amazing. Patty was gorgeously fierce in a black cami that showcased her beautifully defined arms (how do I get those kind of muscles?), green tulle-ish flouncy skirt, green tights and kicka** red high heeled shoes that got their workout as Patty danced and kicked her way to musical heaven. The audience energy was electric. I was so happy to see The Warfield (which has a larger capacity than the places she usually plays when she comes to SF) practically stuffed to the gills with people eager to hear "our" rockin' red head. Hearing the entire audience singing "Happy Birthday" to Patty not too long into the concert brought goosebumps. Loved the group up near the front of the stage wearing red cone party hats. I've forgotten which song (havn't had my morning coffee yet!) but at one point, most of the audience was singing along during the chorus of one song. Instead of being obnoxious as people singing along next to you often is, it was a Moment...the energy of the audience meshing with the energy of the musicians and each giving back to each other. If there was a "theme" or an overall energetic feel to the concert, to me it felt like, "I'm putting the past behind me, gonna kick your a** all the way to next week, and then I'm gonna give myself a resurrection...despite all the crap that happens in this world, love is what it's all about." Songs off the new album showed up, as well as Useless Desires, Mary (you could hear a pin drop during this one...at least from where I was sitting up in the balcony), Icicle (one of my all-time Patty favs I think), Tony (a completely rocking version, and I think it's almost required that she play this in SF)...and now my mind is blanking out again...(coffee stat!) but I'm sure someone will post a setlist soon. The band was in fine form. Doug kicked serious a**, the drummer was rockin' (loved those bongos), the upright/cello/backupsinger woman (sorry I missed her name) was beautiful and groovin', and the last guy (guitarist/ bassist? again missed his name) was so full of energy with this huge grin on his face the whole time he was a joy to watch (and listen to!). It was completely magical and amazing overall, and I'm still feeling energized from the night, as well as gratefull that I was able to attend this special night. Now, my weekend would have been completely perfect if the Ditty Bops hadn't been playing the same night in SF, and instead had choosen to play tonight so that I could have seen them too. Phpth!
