I posted a (yes, fairly lengthy) report on yesterday's Hotel Cafi show this morning and it still hasn't "come back" to my inbox. I know I've been mighty chatty lately--a new Patty album and tickets to three shows in two states will do that to me--but have I exceeded some sort of limit? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 09:17:31 -0800 From: "Lawrence Israelson" Subject: MM: Hotel Cafe What a privilege to see Patty in such an intimate venue! A wonderful and interesting evening (and afternoon), but I'll talk about the show first. Hotel Cafi had a one-hour slot for Patty, with additional acts to follow (separate admission), so the show started pretty much right on time. The place was packed, and various club employees mentioned being drastically overbooked--something like 70 more people than usual, which doesn't sound too bad until you see the size of the room. I believe the "normal" capacity is just 200. When Patty and the band entered, a woman who looked very much like the actress Gina Gershon (and who I was subsequently told IS Gina Gershon, so the probability is reasonably high) came in with them and hung out by the piano just off the front right corner of the tiny stage. The band included Doug Lancio in his usual spot, Michael Longoria on drums and a female bassist/cellist/vocalist who was introduced as "Bryn Davies" or something pretty close. I know a lot of you like to know what Patty wears to her gigs and, although I must thank Lisa for sending along those pictures, they don't really show the lower half of her outfit, so I will try to muddle through: knee-high cowboy-ish boots and some short black pants that may have been some sort of culottes but also looked like the cargo pants my 19-year-old daughter often wears (the ones where you can unzip and remove the lower portions). If any of you can correct or embellish my feeble description, feel free to do so and rescue me from fashion-critic hell. Patty started at the piano with an unfamiliar, slow-tempo song that others have called "First Star." Based on the lyrics (which regrettably I didn't even attempt to transcribe), there's a pretty good chance that is the correct title. She followed with Burgundy Shoes to conclude the keyboard portion of the evening. Next was a playful Stay On The Ride, and as she spoke a little about the genesis of the following song (seeing the circus as a child in Maine), Bryn struggled to lower her microphone to the appropriate height, and I believe Doug finally came over and helped her loosen and adjust it. Then came what I felt was the highlight of the show, a soaring version of Trapeze with Bryn harmonizing. Simply breathtaking. After Heavenly Day and Crying Over, she performed an extended version of Love Throw A Line, opening the song with a first "verse" of "hey, hey-ey" vocalizing. (There's probably a technical term for what she did, but I would need to ask a real musician to find out.) Next was When It Don't Come Easy, complete with a patented broken-string moment that Patty blamed on "Mercury in retrograde" compounded by the guitar tech being absent due to "family business." Next up was a rousing No Bad News that met with thunderous approval, and Patty appeared quite pleased with the response. She then set aside her guitar and absolutely nailed Up To The Mountain. Because of the venue's tight schedule, it was apparent there wouldn't be a long string of encores, but the band did return for a rockin' version of Getting Ready, with all four of the players singing and jamming. That's all I have about the show itself, but I also met some interesting people while waiting for the doors to open. I'd been corresponding via e-mail with one of the club's owners who warned me that table seating was scarce to begin with, and a performer of Patty's stature could mean that all would be reserved for "industry hotshots" and Patty's "entourage." Since my wife was expecting dinner and also hates to stand for long stretches, the pressure was on, so I got there at 2:45 with my iPod and a "Retrieval Artists" novel. This turned out to be overkill, as I was alone in line until almost two hours later. In fact, I was so early that when a van pulled up to drop off some sound equipment, there was nobody in the venue to take delivery. The driver introduced himself as "Apache" and we chatted about music for a few minutes. I confessed to being 98 percent ignorant of jazz, and he recommended Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue." He admitted that he knew nothing about Patty, but he perked up when I mentioned some of the more famous performers who have covered her songs. (I didn't mention Jessica Simpson.) He finally tired of waiting and left, warning that there would be no show without his equipment but promising to return. About 30 minutes later, Apache's van pulled up again and he showed me how he killed the time--with a visit to the nearby Amoeba Music, L.A.s finest record store. Sure, they sell mostly CDs like everybody else, but Apache had purchased a short stack of *vinyl* LPs, mostly pre-Frankenstein Edgar Winter that he was highly enthusiastic about. The venue was still empty, so I stalled him by offering to play some Patty on my iPod. (I carry a splitter and extra headphones for such emergencies--wink, wink.) First, I gave him a snippet of Tomorrow Night to show off Patty's singing. Then, since Apache had mentioned his admiration for Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris, I followed up with No Bad News (noting its passing similarity to Big Yellow Taxi) and Trapeze. He seemed impressed, and by this time one of the venue's employees finally arrived to let Apache make his delivery. Soon after that, a blue van pulled up with Doug and a few others who I eventually figured out were the other two band members and Gina Gershon (or her doppelgdnger). A few minutes later, I heard strains of Patty rehearsing Someone Else's Tomorrow on piano. I still have no idea what entrance she used, as I never saw her arrive or leave. Finally, at around 4:30 I was joined in line by "Kristin," who was visiting from New York and apparently stumbled across something that mentioned Patty's Hotel Cafi appearance, and a couple from Burbank, Mikki Brisk and her husband, Steve. Kristin was hoping for a "drop" ticket, but the rest of us advised that she canvass the line instead, and it wasn't long before she found somebody with an extra. Mikki turned out to be a singer-songwriter herself, with a CD ("Distance And Miles") and a website www.MikkiBrisk.com. I listened to a little bit of "Distance And Miles" on the drive home, and my initial reaction to Mikki's song Red Boots is quite favorable. The CD was a gift because my early arrival paid off. It turned out there was exactly one public table in the performance space, and when the doors opened, my group of four got it, and we were able to make room for Mikki and Steve as well. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 19:23:13 EST From: TimSharp63@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: penalized for excess verbiage? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 18:46:07 -0800 (PST) From: Jess Subject: MM: Thanks Lisa, for the pics. Lisa, I was at the show last night but did not get pics, so these are really fun thanks for sending them. Patty was great last night, she was on fire like you said, really rocked out as she always does. Her main guitarist Doug seemed to look rather sick, poor guy I felt sorry for him, he played like a champ but he did not look well. Maybe he just had a really good time the night before! They are a great duo, but whole band was tight, and the newest member the gal from Nashville who played the Cello, and Bass and Tambourine, was wonderful too! I enjoyed her as well. Well, Patty you did it again, just blew this girl away! Can't wait for the rest of the shows. I wonder if she really wrote "Heavenly day" for her Dog? I guess we will never really know, but it's such a beautiful song, brings me to my knees I tell you. Happy Valentines day everybody! Jessica lisa071573@aol.com wrote: hey guys! Stay on The Ride followed and then (in no particular order) she did Trapeze, Heavenly Day, Love Throw a Line, When It Don't Come Easy, No Bad News, Getting Ready... I think she did Crying Over but maybe I hallucinated that :P oh and the MLK song also. Anyway, it was a lovely little show - Patty had Doug on guitar, a cello/upright bassist and a drummer all on Hotel Cafe's little stage. Apparently the venue was VERY overbooked and the little room was packed with people. I taped the show so I'm hoping to get it transferred to cd this weekend. Patty seemed to be in a great mood and No Bad News really kicked some ass. I'm looking forward to the Wiltern show in a month :) I must say, I really love Heavenly Day... she said it was a love song to her dog, although she may have been kidding ;) :) Lisa ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL.
