(I'm on digest so forgive me if some of this has already been said...) Patty was on fire tonight at Hotel Cafe!! Here are few pics from the show: http://www.lisa071573.com/patty1.JPG http://www.lisa071573.com/patty11.JPG http://www.lisa071573.com/patty3.JPG http://www.lisa071573.com/patty6.JPG She started on piano with a song about wishing on a star (First Star?), then did Burgundy Shoes, also on piano. Stay on The Ride followed and then (in no particular order) she did Trapeze, Heavenly Day, Love Throw a Line, When It Don't Come Easy, No Bad News, Getting Ready... I think she did Crying Over but maybe I hallucinated that :P oh and the MLK song also. Anyway, it was a lovely little show - Patty had Doug on guitar, a cello/upright bassist and a drummer all on Hotel Cafe's little stage. Apparently the venue was VERY overbooked and the little room was packed with people. I taped the show so I'm hoping to get it transferred to cd this weekend. Patty seemed to be in a great mood and No Bad News really kicked some ass. I'm looking forward to the Wiltern show in a month :) I must say, I really love Heavenly Day... she said it was a love song to her dog, although she may have been kidding ;) :) Lisa ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. I haven't heard songs that slow become a hit since like the 70s. Hello Olivia Newton John! Have you never been mellow? sheesh. Gaa gaa and more gaa. I do like the song though. How can you NOT like it? It's Patty Griffin and it's beautiful. But it was safe. Too safe, and too slow. But that's me, I'm a fast and dangerous kind a guy. I like my coffee without cream. I'll fly on planes and refuse to put my seat in the uber safe upright and locked position. grrrr. peace love and vegetable rights, Paul *********************************** * * Well, there's gonna be sex, drugs, * rock n roll. I think it's a wonderful song, a wonderful single and a wonderful introduction to Patty to newcomers. I can totally see it as a possible breakthrough. I didn't really understand it when "Love Throw a Line" was the choice last time out though. I think "Heavenly Day" and "No Bad News" will be an amazing 1-2 punch and if they fail it will be due to promotion, marketing, etc. not due to poor choice of songs, imo. - ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- First, please, PLEASE don't take this personally, Murph, just because you raised the subject. I must say, however, that the idea that record companies look for "accessible" songs to push as radio singles just drives me up the wall. To me, "accessible" is industry-speak for safe, non-threatening, just-like-everything-else-on-the-radio music. (And, no, I'm no "insider," but a life-long music lover with a collection that runs the gamut from Edith Piaf to Green Day.) I'm not saying that "Heavenly Day" is tripe, far from it. The melody is lovely and Patty's vocals are terrific. I just know that last week, while CRT was emanating nearly nonstop from the iPod dock on my desk, when a co-worker stopped to ask "Who IS that?" it was never while "Heavenly Day" was playing. Put another way, if I were commissioned to put together a 90-minute career retrospective CD of Patty Griffin's music, "Heavenly Day" would be hard-pressed to make the cut. If Patty were an established "hit-maker" with a built-in radio audience for her newest release, that would be one thing. But, if the first single from a new album by an artist with no proven radio track record generates lukewarm response, will subsequent singles even be considered for airplay? Honestly, I hope I am wrong, and that the good folks at ATO (and hell, maybe it was Patty's decision) are smarter than me when it comes to promoting new CDs. Perhaps "Heavenly Day" will do for Patty what (first thing that popped into my head) "Just The Way You Are" did for Billy Joel. It just pains me that somebody with Patty's peerless combination of songwriting chops and singing ability is still waiting for "mainstream success" after all these years.
