As an opening act, she often times just carried 2 guitars, her Gibson for drop D tuning, or maybe some other alternate turning, and the Fox guitar for her standard tuning. Back then, she would very frequently break strings. Only 2 or 3 songs into her set one night, I believe in either Philly or Harrisburg, PA.. she broke a string on one guitar, and finished the song that way. She then picked up the next guitar, and made a comment to the effect of "being screwed if that happens again.." Literally 4-5 lines into the next song, BAM, another string breaks, followed by yet another only a minute or so later.. LOL She finished the next couple songs VERY uncomfortably with a 4 string (not bass) guitar. Very funny, but quite frustrating for her I'm sure. There are so many coming to mind now, her "John Entwistle" moment while getting some low end feedback at an early show.. apologizing for losing her voice due to laryngitis, but taking steroids shots in the butt to get it back.. LOL, whispering "holy shit" to herself (while in total amazement) about an amazingly loud chant for an encore that she got in Grand Rapids, messing up about 4 times during the piano part in Peter Pan while filming for Sessions @ West 54th.. constantly forgetting lines, referring to Dougie as looking like he's on his way to the prom, asking how anyone knew her middle name at a show in Philly, then referring to "that emailing list" as probably the source of that info. Hmm, So many incredibly funny memories from such a serious artist. ....glad my memory isn't failing me too much as I slip into middle age.. She false-started twice on Useless Desires (I think the first one was "guitar-tuning"-related, of which I am basically ignorant, and then she forgot the words after about three lines on her second attempt) and decided to just skip it. Mildly disappointing, but more than offset by all the requests and extra encores she's done over the years. Speaking of Shawn Colvin, I've never felt more sorry for a performer than the night in San Luis Obispo that she followed Patty in the rotation of that "guitar pull" with M-C Carpenter and Dar Williams. Patty would do something transcendent ("Tomorrow Night" in a real concert hall is probably the greatest live vocal performance I've had the privilege to witness) and Shawn's body language pretty much cried out, "How am I supposed to follow THAT???" He sings these beautiful songs. But he was part of a "Four Corners" singer/songwriter night and he had to follow Steve Poltz, who writes the funniest, wittiest songs you will ever hear. Beaver would just shake his head after Steve was done. We were all just getting back into our seats after falling off laughing. He never had anything he could follow up with. bruce ________________________________ From: Lawrence Israelson [mailto:LarryI@mail2larry.com] Sent: Friday, February 09, 2007 9:47 AM To: Bruce Greenberg; mad-mission@smoe.org Subject: RE: MM: My favorite Patty flubs/"major mistakes" I've actually seen one, last year at the Boulder Theater.
