I know some lamented its exclusion from CRT, so you'll be glad to know it's available, even if you do have to purchase the entire album (it is NOT available as an individual track). I pre-ordered from B&N to get those 2 extra tracks, but I gladly paid another $9.99 to get a studio version of Moon Song. Cheers! Suffice to say that if you have enjoyed Griffin's repertoire of considered and emotionally precise songs -- as fans from the Dixie Chicks to Solomon Burke to Jessica Simpson have -- you will find your life enriched by "Children Running Through." Images range from the tiniest detail of a trapeze artist's hemline to the grandiosity of a mountaintop, and the songs follow suit. Opener "You'll Remember" manages to put Griffin's big voice front and center but still feel intimate. Anything seems possible in the string-stoked anthem "I Don't Ever Give Up." "Burgundy Shoes" is tinged with a sepia-toned sadness. With its contemplative piano, the Martin Luther King Jr.-inspired "Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)" is gospel in the purest sense, even though Griffin's vocal display of faith never rises to a shout. This former Bostonian is definitely keeping her winning streak alive. Some of her songs relate snatches of youthful memories: others have the feel of skeletally arranged gospel or R&B, with no more accompaniment than a stand-up base and brushes on a snare and cymbal. Griffin hardly needs more, because when she opens her mouth, everything else falls away. Brian Mansfield. Reviews Barnes & Noble Children Running Through by Patty Griffin WITH TWO EXCLUSIVE BONUS TRACKS. Patty Griffin is the epitome of a songbird, a chanteuse who can hush an audience with the eloquence of her passionate storytelling and mesmerize a listener with the simple yet powerful beauty of her sad and lonely voice. For many years, Patty was considered a well-kept secret for those lucky enough to cross her path. But she has steadily begun to win the recognition she deserves, and the wonderful selection of songs on Children Running Through point to that trend gaining serious momentum. *************************************** On "I Don't Ever Give Up," 10 songs into Patty Griffin's remarkable new album, Children Running Through, this gifted, insightful writer wails a defiant theme: "I'm no fighter / But I'm fighting / This ol' world seems uninviting / But I don't give up / No, I don't ever give up / Fall down sometimes / Sometimes I come back flying / Love isn't here / Love isn't here / But it's somewhere." The fight, the folly, the fury, and the frailty of love are meticulously delineated in 14 fully realized songs. For starters, this is the most complex vocalizing Griffin has yet delivered on record; she's as woozy as Rickie Lee Jones, as spiteful as Dylan, as vulnerable as, well, Patty Griffin. The arrangements, too, are uniformly arresting: piano-bar jazz in "You'll Remember"; rustic, spare country summoned by lightly strummed acoustic guitar, minimalist pedal steel winks, and thumping acoustic bass at the outset of the winsome "Trapeze," in which Griffin's whispery voice finds soaring harmony with that of Emmylou Harris; a driving, full-on rock 'n' roll attack on the Dylan-ish howl "Getting Ready"; and a blistering, Irish-tinged burner, "No Bad News," punctuated by majestic mariachi horns(!). Of course, Griffin being Griffin, the lyrical flights are by turns poignant and pungent. This Barnes & Noble exclusive edition features two songs unavailable elsewhere: "Free," a brusque, acoustic guitar-and-brush drums-driven musing that celebrates wanderlust even as it expresses a longing for a place of one's own, and the atmospheric meditation "Up or Down," a moving reflection on life's journey -- here, Griffin takes the measure of her time in a voice by turns assertive and weary, with a close-miked piano and a distant, muted trumpet evocatively shadowing her roller-coaster emotions. Children Running Through might be called a career album, but the apt superlative here is "great." With all her gifts in full flower, Patty Griffin has created something timeless. Great reviews........ Go Patty, Go Patty, It's (almost) your birthday!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Feb 2007 09:17:47 -0800 From: "Lawrence Israelson" Subject: Re: MM: Allmusic.com review It's wonderful to see CRT get this sort of glowing testament, but don't these folks have proofreaders and fact checkers? The reviewer calls the second track "Stay On The Road" and implies that Solomon Burke covers "Heavenly Day" on his latest release. Plus, although I'm at work and don't have time to do the appropriate research myself, I'm fairly certain that his MLK history is wrong. For example, I don't believe the "up to the mountain" quotation occurred in the famous "I have a dream" speech, and I'm also fairly sure the latter speech occurred around the time of the passage of the Civil Rights Act, rather than the day before King was assassinated. On a happier note, got to Barnes & Noble (geographic quirk--I live in Glendale, CA, but am on a business trip in Denver where the nearest B&N turned out to be in Glendale, CO) at ten past nine and was able to hear the first two songs plus the beginning of Trapeze before I had to grudgingly go into the office. You'll Remember was beautiful (reminiscent of her Sam Cooke live covers like Lost And Lookin'), and this version of Stay On The Ride impresses me more than the live rendition I heard in Boulder last year. Can't wait to hear the rest of Trapeze with Emmylou's assistance--the beginning was awesome--and everything else on CRT! And the checkmark, assigned to the best or most representative album of the artist's career so far, has moved from Impossible Dream to Children Running Through. The review as written sounds like a 5-star review. Outstanding and astounding credit for Patty. From what is written, don't know how it got "only" 4.5 stars. And the reviewer doesn't even mention No Bad News, at least from what I could see from scanning the words. . Free Debt Consolidation Quote FCCC offers free counseling & debt consolidation quote. Have to say, Norah kicks booty in a different way than Patty. She is just adorable, has great songs, works with amazing musicians, and radiates poise and grace just like Patty, but differently. I think they are both examples of truly gifted, humble artists who really deserve musical success and bring good things to the table. I highly recommend the new Norah CD and actually got the deluxe addition with behind-the-scenes footage and videos. Norah kills me...she's just so talented and cute. Self-possessed talented lassies, Norah & Patty...I'd love to see a duet with those two if that were ever possible...I think that would be phenomenal should such a thing ever take place... Just my provocative (or not so provocative) two-cents. Have a good day, everybody... Amy ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL.
