Selling out in 48 seconds isn't bloody likely, unless some nside jobs were going on. I know it was a small venue, but still. Don't tease. Just go ahead and have private screenings already, that's much more preferred than to get people's hope up that there are tickets available. First, the tickets became available and then sold out in 4 minutes. It's a small venue, so ok, that seems somewhat likely. Next, the Lizard Lounge website announces that some tickets "may" become available closer to the date of the show, but you'll just have to wait and see. This weekend, the venue and the ticket sales site, Virtuous, announced some tickets would in fact be available for sale Monday the 29th, at noontime. The show is Tuesday night, so seemingly a last minute change occurred and magically, some tickets manifested. The Lizard Lounge site even went so far as to say it was due to "last minute cancellations." Yeah, right. Well, today at noon, I was ready to try my luck at purchasing these tickets. No sooner had I gotten my order typed in, I was told tickets were sold out. SOLD OUT! In less than ONE MINUTE! Maybe I don't know how these things work, but it seems crazy that however many tickets were in fact available, they would be sold out in 48 seconds. I realize that this is a mini tour for Patty. I realize that there are a very small number of tickets to begin with. I also realize she is not responsible for ticket sales herself. But tickets selling out both times so quickly is crap. I hope that anyone from this list who is going to tomorrow night's show has a wonderful time and knows how lucky they are. I also hope that the audiences of these "mini shows" are full of her true fans who got lucky buying tickets and not seat fillers who were given tickets from her management or whoever else and aren't grateful to be there. Arrrgh. Sorry for the rant. But I'm truly disappointed. Immediately rsvp'ed and have a spot (I work on campus so it's an easy lunch-time event). For those not in Philly or not lucky enough to rsvp in time (very small venue with packed standing crowd) you can listen live next Friday, 2/9, at noon by going to www.XPN.org/listen . Not quite the same as being there but it's Patty live! Merle Paul Russell wrote: > I want to give my condolences to Becca. Down with the man!! boo!!! > That's pretty crappy you couldn't get tix. "I was sad." =20 Happily, Griffin figured out how to turn her sadness into verse and chorus, in the bargain becoming one of America's premiere singer-songwriters. She routinely performs for sold-out crowds at Berklee Performance Center and on the main stage at the Newport Folk Festival, but here she was -- in frizzy braids and tall boots, tiny in size and tremendous in talent -- road-testing new tunes in the stamp-size subterranean club where her friend and former drummer Billy Beard is the booking agent. =20 Griffin, now an Austin resident, performed most of the songs from her fifth studio album, "Children Running Through," which comes out next week, along with a handful of gems from her back catalog and a bitter, sweet cover of Sam Cooke's "Get Yourself Another Fool." She's a melancholy strummer, but glimmering just beyond the edges of Griffin's grad-level folk-pop is an eclectic assortment of musical references. She performed a pair of gospel tunes back to back: the graceful new meditation "Up to the Mountain," inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.'s last speech, and "Love Throw a Line," a raucous, soul-saturated appeal for human connection from 2004's "Impossible Dream." =20 The new song "Getting Ready" is a full-on garage-rocker, and Griffin scratched at her strings like they were the lover she's trying to leave. Her loose-limbed three-piece band cobbled a joyful noise for "Stay on the Ride," mashing tough riffs, cool grooves, ambient guitar fuzz , and spoken-word into a folk-funk racket. And of course there were the pristine, unflinching ballads that are Griffin's calling card: "Let Him Fly" (which has been covered by the Dixie Chicks, Linda Eder, and Jessica Simpson ) is now joined by "Burgundy Shoes," "Trapeze," "Railroad Wings," and "Crying Over." =20 Griffin -- a nimble, intense singer -- professed to be a mess of nerves, but no one would have guessed it. She owned every hard, tender note she sang, even the cracked ones. It feels premature to call Griffin an elder stateswoman at the age of 42, but her body of work will eventually, undoubtedly, assure her a place in the pantheon.
