Just wanted to correct some things about the setlist. Patty actually had two setlists in front of her... first, a new one made for tonight, and second, the setlist from Sunday in Chicago (I know because I was at Schuba's and saw it on stage as she did her show that night). She seemed to sort of improvise the set based on a combination of the two setlists. Here's what she actually played: 1. Brand new song - I'm calling it "First Star" 2. Burgundy Shoes 3. Get Yourself Another Fool (Sam Cooke) 4. Stay on the Ride 5. Trapeze 6. Useless Desires 7. Heavenly Day 8. Railroad Wings 9. Making Pies 10. Free 11. No Bad News 12. Long Ride Home 13. Crying Over 14. Love Throw a Line 15. Up to the Mountain - -------- 16. Let Him Fly 17. Getting Ready When she sat in with Session Americana she played two songs- an older bluesy number, reminiscent of Ode to Billy Joe sort of, but I don't know the actual title.... and Tomorrow Night, which was possibly the highlight of the entire night. It was incredible. Other notes: Billy Beard, who books the club and drums in Session Americana was Patty's drummer on Silver Bell. The newest band member (upright bass, cello, and backing vocals) is Bryn Davies. And, John... not to fear... she did play Top of the World in Chicago on Saturday, so she hasn't given it up. I'm sure you'll hear it again. Oh- one last exciting thing- On the "alternates" list of the 2nd setlist was Riding With the Amazons! Wow, I hope we get to hear that on the big tour! Thanks to a generous MMer, I know she played this during an "on-air" radio performance with The Badlees in October of 1996, but it appears the new material from FR and subsequent releases has permanently squeezed it out of her live show. Actually, this seems to hold for most of the LWG stuff. I am listening to a fabulous 2003 show right now, and it was only after I burned a copy for another lister that I realized it included every single song from 1000 Kisses but only Mad Mission from LWG. The good news is, I saw her in Boulder last year and she dusted off both Forgiveness and Moses, neither of which I had ever seen her perform live before. Realistically, though, if I could cajole Patty into playing my "dream concert," with every song I'd like to hear her sing again, the poor woman would probably faint from exhaustion after the fourth or fifth hour... But since losing her major label deal with A&M and signing with Dave Matthewsb ATO Records, thatbs how shebs been perceived: fragile, subdued, frilly. Her forthcoming CD, the gospel-drenched bChildren Running Through,b out Feb. 6, should change all that. Born in Maine and a product of the Boston/Cambridge folk scene, Griffin - who plays an early show at the Lizard Lounge tomorrow night - began exploring her inner punk on 1998bs bFlaming Red.b But when an adventurous follow-up called bSilver Bellb got shelved (though most of it has since leaked onto the Internet), Griffin got quiet. And quiet shebs stayed until now. bIts funny to me,b she said from her Austin, Texas, home. bThe first person I talked to from another label said, bNow youbre not going to rock out again, are you?b And I really havenbt. bThen I went to see this all-girl Japanese punk band, and what struck me is how good they were at blowing off steam, these petite women, so accustomed to putting up with rigidity, rules and tight conditions. It suddenly made sense to me that the older I get, the more steam I have to blow off. And that music is my outlet. And itbs fun.b Co-produced by Spoonbs Mike McCarthy, bChildren Running Throughb throws off the shackles of restraint that have colored much of Griffinbs previous work. On it, she opts for a louder sound with her churchy pipes front and center. Sure, there are ballads. And lullabies, too. But there are also tracks that rock harder than anything shebs recorded in years, and an edgy sound mix that demands attention. bMikebs production left my thrashy guitar mixed at the top,b Griffin said, bwhich is a first for me with material thatbs arranged around a band. The songs are just coming out that way in general: louder. I just have to trust that and let myself sing it.b Patty Griffin, at the Lizard Lounge, Cambridge, tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $25 in advance only; 617-547-0759. - -----Original Message----- From: gillian.reynolds@gmail.com To: jbernhard@wbmd.org Cc: mad-mission@smoe.org Sent: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 1:42 AM Subject: Re: MM: Cambridge Show setlist Hi all, The show tonight was beyond words.
