I am more of a lurker than anything else but there is a wealth of knowledge on this list-serve and I am guessing someone must have an answer. Finally, after years of talking about it, my partner and I are going to make the trip to sxsw in Austin this coming March. We want to see as many shows as possible since we are making the trip from PA. Does anyone know the best way for a music fan to get a badge? I am learning a wristband does not guarantee entry into anything but a badge does. Any suggestions? Any rumors if Patty will be playing?? Thanks! Any rumors if Patty will be playing?? You can buy a badge online at sxsw.com. You don't need to be a music industry type, just sign up and buy it. To my knowledge, there is no other way to get one. That said, depending on what you want to see, I wouldn't bother with a badge. In 4 years with a wristband, I've been shut out of one show I wanted to see (Wrens in 2003 or 2004). If you plan on attending the 'flavor of the year' shows, like the Artic Monkeys last year, then get a badge because those will be mobbed by hipsters. Hell, I've had the best times and seen some of the best shows at the day parties anyway, and badges are useless for those. BTW, badges do NOT guarantee admittance to shows, just priority over wristbands at popular showcases. If the venue is full, you don't get in badge or not. The only real advantage a badge has is that they are easier to get than a wristband, if 4x the cost. Wristbands are tougher and tougher to get each year. They are pretty much only available: a) in Austin where they sell out instantly; b) through http://www.southbywristbands.com which opens in January, or c) by buddying up with a badgeholder - badgeholders are entitled (but not guaranteed) to buy a wristband for someone else. I've done c) the last couple years, did southbywristbands one year. I have friends that have just gone and paid cover at the shows they want to see. Cover-payers have last priority to get in (after badges and then wristbands) but it's perfectly viable. I think the discounted badge sale ends Nov 10, so if you DO want to get one, pull the trigger quick. Also if you don't have a hotel yet get one NOW. dd 'saw Patty play outside at Stubbs at sxsw a couple years ago, awesome.' ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V10 #132 **********************************
