It happens on almost every music list I've ever been on. One list literally blew apart because of that. It spun a small group that is in its 4th year, and the musical group list from which they spun is never discussed. They chat about everything else, from groups to music, but NOT the subject of the original list. Relax, folks, my mp3 player has an eclectic list of musical genres out there. It's not all about one artist. If JS wants to make money for Patty, yay! I won't be listening, but yay! Others have alluded to songwriters losing the publishing rights. I found this link which gives a great synopsis of the deal, why the Beatles formed a publishing company they could lose control of, and how much this effects McCartney's bottom line. It gives some insight into the songwriting business. I was relieved to know that Paul can still make his cable bill... ;-) http://www.snopes.com/music/artists/jackson.htm Roy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 16:46:25 -0400 From: "Jeffrey C. I do like to keep the MM list active from time to time. ha ha MB>>There are many artists who wrote none or very few of their songs that are very highly regarded. >> um, not highly regarded by me. I don't mind 'em covering songs they want, but making a living off of covering others' works (unless you are parodying or tributing) is pretty piss poor. A rare exception would be those who combine their efforts to produce some good stuff (like those peanut butter cups.... a chocolatey and peanut buttery heavenly combination). MB>>What does percieved intelligence have to do with musical ability? This is an invalid argument. >> I think you got confused because I didn't separate that properly with a new paragraph. My mistake on that one. That wasn't what I was arguing. Actually I wasn't arguing at all, so technically it is invalid to call the argument invalid when it wasn't an argument in the first place. hee hee MB>>So, by your logic, Woody Guthrie shouldn't have been a musician? He could neither read nor write music. So much for that icon of American music! There have been many, many talented musicians who couldn't read music. >> Whatever, you knew what I meant. But if you want to make a big stink about my own opinions and how I'm slipping down the slippery slope then I will eventually give in and say "yes, then what I am saying is that Woody Guthrie shouldn't have been a musician." There's a big difference between not reading music because of your abilities and not reading music because it's simply not worth your while. hmmm. And now that you bring it up, I would have to say that yes, intelligence should weigh in on one's musical ability. It takes some sort of brain functioning to come up with words and notes to express what one is feeling. It doesn't absolutely require intelligence to create a good song since too many things can happen at random, but it is certainly helpful. MB>>Actually, permission has to be asked to release a recording of another artist's song. If the song has already been released by the original artist or someone else, they cannot decline the request. >> Yes, thank you for letting me know about that (and you others too! You know who you are.). It's good to know. My un-educated rant about that was because I remembered what Sony did to Prince, and how when some artists sign away their songs in a contract, then I was under the impression that if they are sneaky enough that sometimes there could be a stipulation where the artist no longer has any say whatsoever. I'm glad that Patty Griffin apparently has good people doing her recording rights. Time will tell for certain, though. I don't think the "negativity" is as much musical elitism as it is other factors. Who knew? <> okay okay okay okay. I got it. I got it. No one has to read music here. I was wrong. But to clarify my earlier statement: it was Ashley Simpson whom I was refering about not being able to read music. I don't know about Jessica but I assumed she could; because for Jessica I didn't see people in the studio stopping her songs after every 5 seconds of recording to tell her how to sing the next bits. Perhaps it was elitist of me. Anyway, I was under some impression that Jessica Simpson had played instruments or something in school and could read music. Now I'll stop fooling with my hotmail account so as to not respond every five seconds to something posted.
