I missed the lizards particularly. Oh, and of course the beaches. Deliciously white and sea foam, and tourists baking themselves, some extra crispy. Apparently it's been light on hurricanes this year, so I'm glad I could leave all my stuff in my townhouse, and not say...just drop it in the water to save me some angst. After a night of revelry in my most favorite of favorite activities (i.e., drinking at my pub) I pondered and pondered this morning on my toilet. Because that is what one does when on a toilet. One ponders. And I came up with this: I don't like Jessica Simpson covering Patty Griffin. Why? Because. I don't really feel JS has that much talent. She's going through tough times in her life and she wants to sing a song that appropriately touches on her break-up??? Here's an idea, why not write your own ding darn song then? Oh that's right, she doesn't actually write any of her songs. Sure the Dixie Chicks covered PG. The thing is, that even though I don't really like the Dixie Chicks that much (I think it really has to do with the whole name of the group and the way the Country music people enveloped them as the best act to come out of country since sliced bread back in the 90s) I'll have to admit that they've got some talent. I mean, I paid money money to go see them cover the Patty Griffin song in concert and see PG open for them. They even used real instruments and everything. However, I really really really don't think I would pay money money to see JS in concert for any reason whatsoever. At all. So the fact that she covers a PG song I don't know would be enough to even make me want to buy the CD. We're talking about Jessica Simpson here. It would be the most embarrassing CD I would own. I would marker it out and write "Led Zeppelin" or something on it. I feel that even though I'm sure it's considered a compliment that some pop star wants to cover your songs, there is a degree of how the compliment should be received by who is giving the compliment. Jackson Browne covering a PG song....wow! Ashley Simpson covering a PG song...WTF??? Johnny Bravo covering a PG song....the revitalization of Greg Brady's singing career. This particular artist (JS) wasn't sure if Chicken of the Sea was tuna or chicken. And that actually borders on her being retarded. I haven't been keeping in touch with the whole thing so I don't know. However, I wonder how much say Patty Griffin had in actually allowing Jessica Simpson to cover her song, because the music industry loves buying all those copyrights from artists. Once they do that they usually have some stipulation where they can do what they please with the songs. Instead of promoting PG like they should, they give a song they may now own to one of their glamorous popstars to put on her next album. I hope this was not the case and that PG still retains ownership and actually allowed JS to cover it (in blessing as well as hollow words). However, I don't really know so... I just remember a few artists getting the shaft by the recording industry. If "The Matrix" is running out of poppy material, I just hope they don't drag talent like Patty Griffin into their lair of sloth. My 2" on a Hump Day morning to ya! I really am affected by her sister Ashley though. My SO was watching some reality TV show with Ashley Simpson in it and she was in the studio...and she couldn't read music. Now call me picky, but I think the number one thing one should know if one wants to be a musician or singer is that one should read music. The Matix people were in the control room telling her how to sing the song. All Ashley had was a sheet of paper with words on it (over half of which she didn't write herself). It so much disgusted me seeing this, that it inevitably rubbed off onto my opinion of Jessica. I don't think Jackson Browne has covered any Patty Griffin song, however I have heard from another MMer that he's done a lot of other things: speaks highly of her, recommends her stuff on stage in concert, plays PG in the sound system at his concerts, and stuff like that. Oh, (not patty related) and I'm currently looking for a NTSC version of "The Green Wing". That is hysterical! I watched almost the entire first season and it was excellent. cheers, Paul - ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Steve Mercer (Relay Port Agency)" To: "'Paul Russell'" , Subject: RE: VPOP3-SPAM: MM: Why I don't like JS recording a PG song Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2006 18:24:21 +0100 Hello Paul Your article cheered me up today-Thanks.
