This is for Murph & other Tom Waits fans. I do believe there are a few of you out there. :) I've read that Tom Waits can't watch Spinal Tap without crying, it's too close to what touring has been for him. But last night, there wasn't a single tiny Stonehenge in sight. Everything went smoothly, the audience was full of appreciative fans. The concert started a bit late. That's what happens when you have to pick up your tickets via the will call box. Tom explained during the show that he did that to keep the ticket scalping down (said you could buy a TV with what they get or a horse, or a TV and a horse). The stage was pretty minimal looking accept for a bunch of items that looked like megaphones, from where I was sitting, piled into a neat square, sculpture type creation, center stage. There was a white backdrop curtain with a light shining behind it. This set the tone of the show, when the musicians came out through the divide in the curtain, their shadows were funhouse mirror freakish at first & then, gradually became normal in size as they entered the stage. Tom did a lot with those long fingers of his, right from the start. Right before he came through the curtain, he splayed them out. Looked cool! He ended almost every song by splaying those fingers out and then bringing them down. Made me think of a skeleton/scarecrow conductor (bone machine). He had a guitarist, an upright bass player, a drummer and a pianist/xylophonist. I borrowed the set list from someone else. Seems accurate from what I can tell. He opened up with Make it Rain. I was drinking it in, thinking how lucky I was to be in that opera house actually seeing Tom Waits live. Some of the songs had a different take on them. 'Till the Money Runs Out was a little mellower, jazzier. He sat at the piano for a few songs. He handled the audience banter well. Asked one shouting guy if he was still living at the airport. He told us he liked us. Tom said if we wanted we could hand our measurements to one of the ushers & he'd have hard shell cases made for all of us so we could travel with them. He said it would be fun and dangerous. He also told us that the tickets for the opera house were sold out in ten minutes. He paused while people cheered & then he said, "Frankly I was a little hurt. But, I know you have lives, jobs." Highlights for me were Make It Rain, God's Away on Business, Way Down in The Hole, Falling Down, 'Till the Money Runs Out, Sin's of The Father, Shake It, Get Behind the Mule, It Rains on Me (sing along, easy lyrics & it really didn't seem to matter if you could sing in key or not), Goin' Out West. Day After Tomorrow was a touching song about a soldier coming home, day after tomorrow. The audience cheered a lot during that song. First time I heard the song, I remember holding my breath and hoping that the song didn't end with him coming home in a box. What a great night! I hope he adds to his tour so more fans get the chance to see him. Almost forgot, after the concert was over, we walked to Greek Town to kill a little time. It was very crowded in downtown Detroit, Lion's game, Tiger's game, Friday night. I guess we took about a half an hour. As we drove by the Opera House, there was Tom signing autographs. I didn't get out, thinking I didn't really have anything to sign & I can be a bit shy at times. About twenty minutes away it dawned on me that I could have asked him to sign my ticket. Maybe next time!
