Rarely happens that early in the set. My reaction was that it should have been recorded to be released as Patty's single on her new CD. Don't see much chance of matching that in a studio environment. That , & the MLK song were my highlights. When Patty introed it , she said it's called the MLK song. That one should be on the CD simply b/c it's such a great piece of music. The songs that were new to me show that Patty still writes with the great range of style that she's shown over the years. Had some pangs of regret that I couldn't follow the whole tour this year , & watch them evolve , both from Patty's approach to them & my own perception of them. " Icicles " & MLK didn't move me much on 1st listen , but have grown to 2 more gems in her queenly tiara. Patty said she wrote " Burgundy Shoes " in response to a challenge to write a happy song. That she perceives it as one , gives insight to how deep & melancholy she runs. While the lyrics speak of a happy time , her trademark plaintive sadness in the vocals belie the claim. Patty said the new CD is expected early next year. Have an illegible & forgotten note after " Truth " , & the gas/wipers note is a pre-trip one , so I guess I'm done. Set List: ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2006 12:21:50 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Avalon Theater Coordinated with Jan , as we were attending the same 4 shows , & figured we could hang out during the trip. Nice drive thru Md. once I-95 was behind me. Got to my Comfort Inn & discovered Jan & I were neighbors , as her Holiday Inn was next door. Fortunate turn of events , b/c I had lost my directions to Alexandria while checking in to my last hotel , & printed out new ones from her lobby computer. Also fortunate b/c Jan plied me with 2 fresh Krispy Kreme's while hanging out before we left. Drove into Easton together & ran into ( figuratively ) soundman Roy Taylor bicycling near the theater on this beautiful spring day. Dined at the connected restaurant & headed in. Ran into Insley ( Swimfairy for those who may recall ) who was there with mother & sister. While I was talking to her , a lovely young lady confronted me & said I wouldn't recognize her. I'm sure I would have anyway , but thanks to Murph for tipping me off that the very talented Darcie Miner would be there. With her straight brown hair & dark frames , I said she looked practically secretarial compared to her blue hair days. Had the pleasure of introducing Insley & Jan , who are big fans , to her. Jan got her tik late & was in the balcony , while I got in early & had front row center. While enjoying Michael's set , I noticed 3 seats next to me still empty. When I saw 2 guys slip sort of furtively into 2 of them , I put my jacket on the other for Insley while I intermissed. Came back to find someone in my seat , who said that staff told him there was an empty up front. We bartered for awhile , & he agreed to take Insley's seat 3 or 4 rows back on the right aisle. If he's reading , I'd like to thank him for not being too contentious , as the show was her 17th birthday gift , & she was thrilled to be up front. We also hadn't been in touch for awhile , & had to catch up on all things Patty. Set List : ( finally ) Moon River I Said to the Sky Free No Bad News Down There ( solo ) When it Don't Come Easy Burgundy Shoes ( piano ) Up or Down ( piano ) Stay on the Ride Making Pies Love Throw a Line MLK Song Time Turns us Down Railroad Wings Long Ride Home Moon Song Encore Getting Ready Nobody's Crying " Down There " really piqued my interest. Was going to call it " Fire on Eden " , but got the name from a later setlist. Hard for me to get a good read on the composition & vocals when I'm straining to catch the lyrics , but I'm guessing it will compete with " Heavenly Day " for my favorite new song. Signature , shockingly tragic lyrics. Like many of her songs that present us with the tragic side of the human condition , with what I perceive in her voice as the unspoken hope that we may take note & resolve to help improve it. Managed to write down a few legible lyrics ; " seen the fire rain on Eden , I could not turn around ". Also noted a few lines about tucking children into bed , and then ; " prayed to my God to keep them - every one of them is dead ". While lighter songs like " Heavenly Day " & " Ridin' With the Amazons " are fine , these are the songs that will imprint themselves on the collective human psyche and herald her greatness for years to come. She did the song solo , & mentioned something about ruining her guitar every time she did NBN. She didn't break a string that I saw , so I assumed she did it solo while Doug retuned , but she opened with it solo next day , so , ???? NBN was a highlight again , but not up to the Scottish Rite version. MLK also. It's my impression that she's most emotionally involved with as she sings.Didn't get a good sense of TTuD , as I was trying to figure out what to call it before I saw it on a setlist. RW not growing on me yet. Big applause for LRH , which was good to hear , & Moon Song is always up there. Rocked nicely with GR , then disappointed with thank yous , meaning only a 2 song encore again , but when she finished with a great " Nobody's Crying " I turned to Insley & said " perfect ending ". Sent me away happy : ) Sometime during the show , Patty had an exchange with someone who's g/f was having a b'day. After a little back & forth , he started trying to sing it , prob expecting Patty & the crowd to join in. Perhaps inspired by Patty's HB for Doug in Pgh. , assuming that if it's good enough for Doug , it's good enough for Kim. Thankfully , Patty cut him short with " no , we don't do that here ". Amazing how far some will press friendly hospitality if you don't risk the " rude" label by stopping them abruptly , when that label belongs to them. On to Birchmere. Got the Krispy Kreme day wrong. That was in Alexandria on the 17th , not Easton on the 15th. Another embarrassing senior moment : ( Hope my comments from memory are for the right day at Birchmere : ) Doors were 5:00 , got there at 2:45 for 1st in line , & my usual seat in front of Patty's mike. Melinda , who I met at the 930 club in DC last year , showed up soon after , with friends. Hadn't gotten much sleep since I left , but too warm & sunny to snooze. Melinda's friend Nancy played Angel of Mercy & got me a bottle of water when she made a store run. Thank you Nancy ! Birchmere gives you a line # , & lets you into the bar area 1 hour before they let you in the show , then calls line # 's for seating in the theater. Sat near Kathleen in the bar & started talking , & she told me what city she lives in. I said ; " oh , that's where Insley lives " she laughed , & it turned out that Insley had copied some Patty stuff I sent for her. Small world ! Jan & I settled in , & had dinner during the 90 min between seating & showtime. Jim Smith noticed me in Easton the night before , & came up & introduced himself. Nice to meet you too , Jim , and glad to see others hitting multiple cities , b/c my touring isn't as extensive as in the past. We'll be looking for your reports from the road. Don't have good recall on it either. Maybe it was the photog. A very polite & generous one. He came up before Patty started , told us he was taking pix early on , & assured us that he would be as unobtrusive as possible. Also took our E-mails & said he would send us the pix. I'm sure Jan will share them on TDtT if he comes thru. Don't know if he was there during the 1st song , or I was just anticipating him. He was doing the pix for an article on Patty in Music Monthly , a hard copy & web magazine out of Baltimore with mid-Atlantic distribution. www.musicmonthly.com He said it would be in the May issue if they used it. That WAS the 1st Birchmere show , wasn't it , Jan ? Otherwise , my favorites were the usual suspects ; NBN , Heavenly Day , MLK , LRH & Moon Song. Patty or me , or both of us , seem to warm up as the show goes on. Anyway , later show versions seem to be a notch higher. The case with MR here. I liked it from the 1st listen from E'town , but this version peaked. When I 1st heard " Heavenly Day " , I thought it might be a paean to God , but it seems that it's a paean to Dog , which , as everyone knows , is God spelled backwards. Patty described her affection for her dog , & said she was inspired to write HD for him ( her ? ) one day when they were lazing on the couch. I think she has 2 dogs , but I'll guess that this one is Bean , who she once described as her " 10 pound boss ". She also said that it was her 1st love song. Hmmm.
