Wagner" Subject: MM: Patty in Pittsburgh A beautiful spring day in Pugh , & the beautiful Patty Griffin performing at the By in the evening. What more could one ask ? It's been awhile , ( 9 months! long enough to have a baby ) but like running into an old friend , I picked up where I left off. Set List: Moon River I Said to the Sky Free No Bad News Trapeze ( solo ) Heavenly Day Happy Birthday Up or Down ( piano ) Burgundy Shoes ( piano ) Love Throw a Line Up to the Mountain When it Don't Come Easy Useless Desires Railroad Wings Stay on the Ride Moon Song Encore Rain Truth # 2 Icicles Falling The prolific PG did 5 songs I had never heard before , & apparently has 4 more in her repertoire , according to the Lexington & Ann Arbor set lists. On 1st listening , the gospel- tinged " Heavenly Day " was my favorite. Glad I'm hitting 4 shows Easter weekend , & hoping to hear the rest. She did say that we were her guinea pigs , as she wanted to do some playing before going into the studio for a new CD. Still on top of her game , my only ( slight ) disappointment was the choice of piano songs. Excellent songs , but they necessarily preclude my favorites. Only other problem was the relative guitar volume , but we were on the far left , 2nd row , & that may been the reason. Otherwise the Birthday Boy's playing was excellent & complementary. Birthday Boy ? Ah , yes. After an aside between songs , Patty says " someone's having a birthday tomorrow " & when she sat down at the piano , she did HOB for Doug ( 40 for you interested ladies ) , with some of the crowd joining in , & referred to him as the BB later in the show. Liked the rest of the new songs to varying degrees , with the novelty/bluesy " Stay on the Ride " showcasing her considerable vocal skills , as " Riding's With the Amazons " once did , but it mysteriously disappeared. She broke a string during " No Bad News " & played on for awhile , but then started laughing & let Doug , as she put it , " save her again ". He did a great job of carrying a 2 guitar song on his own. He replaced the string while Patty did " Trapeze " solo. A line in that song showed that Patty's occasional morbid tendencies are still with her ; " one of these nights the old girl's going down ". Liked the show a lot until " Up on the Mountain " ( AKA peaceful valley or MILK song ) , then as usual , Patty exceeded my always high expectations. The 2nd half was Patty at her best. A little disappointed with my hometown crowd , as there was very little standing after the regular set , & not much standing in the very front rows after the encore. Michael Fracas opened with a short , but excellent set , finishing with my personal favorite by him. Me & my red shoes will see y'all Easter weekend. Some people don't care If they live or they die Some people want to know What it feels like to fly They gather their courage And give it a try Patty Griffin " Trapeze " Don ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 07:13:22 -0400 From: "rockerpgh _" Subject: MM: Re: Pittsburgh Concert These had been the advance concert notices in the newspapers: April 6: Folk singer Patty Griffin offers beautiful and challenging music at her performance at 8 p.m. at the Byham Theater, Downtown. 412-456-6666 On the quieter side, the lovely voiced Patty Griffin brings with her modern folk to the Byham at 8 p.m. with Michael Fracasso. She wore glittery high heels with a little bow on the side, red fish net stockings, a slim black skirt and a red, sleeveless knit top with light blue trim and a gold (?) argyle pattern. Her hair is shoulder length and the curls are softer. Patty and Doug came out and she opened with her beautiful rendition of Moon River. It was an excellent start. Here is the song list, but I may not have some of the titles quite right: Moon River I Said to the Sky Free No Bad News Trapeze Heavenly Day Up or Down (at piano) Burgundy Shoes (at piano...she said this was her first 'happy song"...still slow and soft and minor:-)) Love Throws A Line Up to the Mountain (MLK) Don't Come Easy Useless Desires Railroad Wings Stay on the Ride The Moon Song Encores: Rain Truth #2 Icicles Ten of these eighteen songs were new to me but it was still a great concert. Most of the new stuff felt like it was in the first half of the show, but looking at the set list shows a different reality. It is Doug's 40th birthday and we sang Happy Birthday to him. Patty said they're gonna have some time to relax in Pittsburgh tomorrow. Don, it was nice to see you tonight. Over and out.
