   To those of you planning to attend the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival 
in San Francisco, here's a little reminder of something I posted a few months 
ago.  I'm still not sure if I'm going to be able to make it this Saturday, but 
you all have a great time!

It's great news about Patty playing this festival, but for those who are 
planning to attend, a word of warning is in order.

I attended the HSBF for the first time last year.  Overall it was a 
disappointment.  Not because of the music--which was great--but because of 
the audience.

Any "free" music festival brings out a LOT of people who are going simply 
because it's free--including many who are selfish, rude and have very little 
respect for the music, the artists or the fellow attendees around them.  
Truth is, 
they just don't appreciate something they get for free.  My girlfriend and I 
got stuck in the back of a couple of performances areas.  We had brought 
blankets and beach chairs for the day.  It was EXTREMELY annoying to find 
that 
nearly everyone around us was gabbing and laughing loudly throughout the 
music 
sets, totally oblivious to the artists on stage.  Many parents were letting 
their 
small children run wild, making lots of noise.  Others allowed their dogs to 
roam freely.  Although we were in a large group who had been sitting for 
hours, crowds of people thought nothing of standing in front of us and 
completely 
blocking our view, despite my frequent requests to "PLEASE!  SIT DOWN!"

I noticed that the ambiance was MUCH different towards the front of the 
stages.  Those people had come early for good seats.  These were the true 
music 
lovers--they were quiet during the sets and very respectful of the artists 
and 
each other.

The lesson I learned was this:  if you're going to the HSBF just to hang out, 
fine--you probably won't care about the music very much anyway.  But if 
you're going to truly ENJOY the music, GET THERE AS EARLY AS YOU CAN so that 
you 
can sit near the front of the stages--and join those who are there for the 
same 
reason...

I just wanted to chime in that all you people who are going to the Hardly 
Strictly Bluegrass Festival SUCK! Nah, I'm jealous of all of you. I was 
really thinking about going, because I have a free place to stay and that 
lineup is incredible. Hell, Patty AND Todd Snider at the same festival. 
That's enough, right there. Then you throw in those legends of bluegrass, 
Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, plus a few of the contemporary 
greats like Rickey Skaggs, and it starts getting unbelievable. Hell, I'd 
even like to see the Peasall Sisters!

I can't believe this thing is free.

But, I had to look at it realistically, and a flight across the continent 
for a long weekend is not the smartest thing I could do right now.

Anyway, all of you who are going, report back. Anyone who sees Todd 
Snider's set, I'd like to hear about that, too.
