I have tried to write you all multiple times but don't think anything got through. No cell service and no e-mail until the very end a= nd then only sparse. =0D =0D It was the mission you hate to love. So much devastation yet so much lov= e.=20 Emotionally, I went to hell and back...seeing the terror on teams who wer= e placed at the front lines without adequate protection. Hearing the stori= es about what happened on the bridge, what happened in the Convention Center and of course, the Superdome. And these were not rumors. They were trut= hs, coming from the mouths of the men, who were sent there to protect us, and handle the violence. Even they had tears and .......these guys just got back from Iraq. =0D =0D Well, I was sleepless for days until we got our Mission at the Covington Special Needs Care Shelter, just north of Ponchartrain. There, 4 people envisioned a model that would work and implemented it years ago. They ha= d 3 "drills" with real hurricanes that barely missed the area. By Katrina, t= hey were ready. Run by 2 social workers, a home health nurse and a hospice nurse, they managed to evacuate many people who were elderly, on home oxy= gen had diabetes and needed care from a family member, and a few psychiatric patients. The secret to evacuation? People will not abandon their pets.= =20 They also set up a little animal shelter, where people could visit their dogs, cats, parrots, and toads. They were prepared to handle about 40 patients. With our help, they ended up seeing over 700.=0D =0D My 31 member medical team (DMAT) arrived with the energy level of caged m= ice We were a combination of Missouri, Iowa, and Ohio and named ourselves MOHIOWA. We were Emergency docs, ICU nurses, and critical care medics, anticipating hell. We were dropped into heaven, where Louisianans spoke slowly, caregivers stayed in the shelter with their family members, and l= ove abounded. I felt lucky to be Junior Varsity since this was my first FEMA Mission. I really was not emotionally prepared for the front lines.=0D =0D Well...now back to Patty. I was sleepless for days waiting with other te= ams for our mission. At Covington, I worked nights in the shelter and awaken= ed throughout the days to sign prescriptions for our out patient clinic. Pa= tty held my hand and joined me on the mission. After my first all-nighter, I went by the animal shelter, picked a little 8 month old golden retriever, took her for a morning walk and then snuck her into my cot with me. She = was in heaven, spread out her legs hogging the whole cot and rested her throa= t on mine, like I was one of the litter. I plugged in my IPOD and listened= to Impossible Dream. Every song had new meaning. On a spiritual level, Pat= ty has faced good and evil, emerging with undeniable hope. She sang me to sleep every day after that. I had lots of music, but only listened to ID and one song from the Be Good Tanyas- The Lakes of Ponchartrain. =0D =0D Just had to share my spiritual journey with kindred spirits. Thanks so m= uch Patty. Hey=85did I miss Austin City Limits? Were you there?Have you guy= s seen the whole trailer for Elizabethtown with Long Ride Home? I found it once but now cannot find it. Were you there? ****************************************************** Janet, this is Sheryl from Austin. Things are not looking good for our coastal cities and once the storm comes inland, we are expected to have wind and rain here in Austin. The ACL people won't cancel or even touch the Fest as of yet. They will wait until the last minute. I heard a guy on the radio yesterday who works around these music festivals and he said it has a lot to do with insurance-that in most cases the insurance companies won't pay for the cancellations if there is not enough rain or other stipulations. So, they have to wait until the very last minute to make any decisions on what to do. Austin is expecting 65,000 people for this fest (it's sold out) and we are already full up from Katrina-things are crazy in this part of the world right now! God Bless- sheryl ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V9 #180 *********************************
